Which code reader?

I was looking on Amazon for a code reader for my 1992 Bronco, and I noticed that there are different code formats.

Which format do I need for my truck? What accesories do I need for the reader to make it do all that I need for it to do? I'm also ordering a repair manual for the truck, so I'll know HOW to use the dang thing.

This stuff is WAY different than my carbed '85!

I think I answered my own question.

EEC-IV right?

I also noticed that there are reader extensions and the like. Are there any "must have" accessories?

Thanks!

A paperclip and a test light will do just as well if you can count. But if you buy a reader don't spend a ton of money on it simply because it really doesn't cost that much to pull codes without one.

The differences between carburated and EFI aren't as far removed as you might think. You just have to adapt to the idea that most of the things that were once either mechanical or vacuum operated switched to being electronic. The MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor is the "vacuum advance" that would have existed on a carb'd engine. The PIP (Profile Ignition Pickup) takes the place of the ignition points & condenser. The IAC (Idle Air Control) valve and solenoid is your electronic choke. The ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) sensor is your heat riser/thermostatic choke control. The emissions sensors cannot be removed because they are better integrated than the "add-on" stuff that carburated engines had. But, since they ALL talk to the same computer, pulling fault Codes eliminates a ton of the time, money and "wild goose chasing" that you had to deal with when tracking down an issue with an older setup.

Thanks!! I just printed this post and added it to my little "reference folder". It helps to be able to visualize previously known systems in this light.

If you prefer the easy way, buy a Equus 3145 and be done with it, it will cost you around $30.

x2 on the Equus, and I would suggest the extension cable, also. $$ well spent IMO.

This might be a good deal

While looking for a code reader for my 92, I ran across this one. I can't use it, but I thought I'd post a link to it for you guys, just in case one of you can.

It seems to be a great deal. Things on this site go quick, so if the link doesn't work, it's because they sold out.

I have the same #3145 reader for my 93'.. very happy thus far.. An extension cable is nice for the brake/steering initiation part of the KOER test phase.. I didn't get the extension cable.. but still was able to get the codes but moving quick.. LoL..
