Drove a 2004 XLT 5.4, C2 rear end, 90K, no leather, no entertainment, no pwr pedals, no pwr vent windows, no heated seats etc. Has clean autocheck. Windshield replaced. Going to need shocks and steering stabilizer, but seems to drive well. Has grease fittings in ball joints. Tires are 285 76 16 D rated, about a year old. Cloth interior is clean. Overall pretty clean, but not mint. I did notice one dent, on each side of the roof, just above the rear doors. I also notice that the rear of both front fenders are slightly out farther than the doors. In other words the rear of both front fenders dont sit flush with the doors. Looks factory though!? Has a 2 line tape pinstriping that looks perfectly straight. Rear chrome bumper has a large dent. Trailer hitch has been welded back together and then Rhino lined. Looks like hell. Price has been lowered to $13,600. What do you think of price for a XLT with the issues I described. Dealer says he knows p/o and didn't tow anthing. Had a large family. Going back tomorrow to see it on a lift and drive it again.
It could have been banged up but not totaled, so it wouldn't have a salvage title.
Going to need shocks and steering stabilizer
Figure about $400 minimum.

That may have been added after a repair to dress it up.
Trailer hitch has been welded back together and then Rhino lined.
I can't imagine what kind of force it would take to break a trailer hitch!
Dealer says he knows p/o and didn't tow anthing.
Yeah, and probably only drove it to church on Sundays.

I'd say that is too much money for a stripped version that hasn't been loved. However, it is worth whatever it will bring in your market. I've seen much better equipped X's with similar mileage for less money.
It would be worth about 6,500 to me. The hitch makes no sense to me. I do live in the north, so cars tend to rust here. I paid 8,000 for mine, 2000 v10 limited w/100,000 miles, and it came with two sets of tires. My X didn't have the cometic issues yours seems to have, nor the questionable past.
Sorry, my opinion, but I'd steer clear of this one at that price.
Just for reference, I bought my 2004 in Sept of 2008, with 64K on it. It is an XLT with the 5.4 and it's 4x4. It is red with silver 2 line pinstriping down both sides and silver cladding on the bottoms. I paid 12,200, but gas prices were at almost $4.00 then.
I my self have been searching for an Ex, diesel though, for about 2 months, and from what I have seen, that is wwaayy too much money...To put it in perspective, im in N. California, and I just missed out, by matter of hours, on two Ex's, one was an XLT, and the other was a Limited, both diesels. They sold for under $8k. Both in good condition 150k-200k miles.
Did not get a chance to go back and see it on a lift or drive it on the highway. Too many family obligations today, but I'm going tomorrow AM. There are a bunch of interior items that I mentioned to the dealer that he said he would have no problem fixing. It seems these things are selling pretty quickly up by me. I would prefer a LTD I think for all the extra ammenities but my current suv doesnt have LTD level trim either.
I will ask the dealer to replace shocks and steering stabilizer in addition to the other interior repairs. He is also going to take my suv in on trade and cut me a check back for the difference which is cool. So if we strike a deal I can drive in with mine and leave with his. But we will see. If this one doesn't work out, I have another to see on Tuesday. 2004 XLT, No premium pkg but does have factory entertainment, V10, C2 axle. and less miles than this one.
I had a chance to think about this one, finally. I initially kinda latched onto this one as it was the first one I touched, drove, etc. In the end I decided, with the help of members here(and thanks) to pass. There were a few too many issues. The prior owner just simply used the heck out of it. It wasn't loved. I had serious doubts as to how well it was maintained, oil changes, etc. It looked nice with the 285's on it, but I called the dealer and explained to the salesman my rationale. Simply, I want one in nicer shape! He offered to fix the major issues AND lower the price. Still said no. I have another one to see today or tomorrow. Also an XLT, no premium pkg, but does have rear entertainment, less miles, and higher price. Its listed with a Ford dealer. The hunt continues.
I would also check with other used car dealers, not just a Ford dealership. The Ex's I've seen at dealerships are typically higher in price than the other used car lots.
Don't worry about traveling far to pick one up. I know in the Northeast they use a LOT of road salt and cars rust. You can get a round trip flight from Southwest for a couple of hundred dollars. If you do buy it, then you can save the return flight on a later trip and not pay a change flight fee. You'll drive the new X home.
BigApple, if you keep having problems finding an X, give a shout. There are 5 that have just come on the market around me. Guess people are freaking about the gas and diesel going up 3 are private sales and 2 are dealers. One thing about a VA X is it should be clear on any rust what so ever, and the underside should be good too. Don't know if i can post links, there is 1 at Myers Ford in Elkton VA(google them) that I was thinking about buying that is in excellent shape, but found another that I liked more. I also thought the price was a bit high, but really didn't haggle with them, and as of now it has probably been there for a couple months so they are ready to move it
