Thanks guys for the ideas, I'll start with fuel pump connections and go from there. I picked up a Actron PocketScan Plus last year when Advance had them on sale.....never used it, but it has a book with it . Let you know what I find, thanks again!
make sure your CEL comes on when you turn the key to "run"
Thanks for the link for codes, P1121 is Throttle position sensor inconsistent with Mass air flow sensor, P1443 is EVAP system.
The check engine light is NOT on the codes I got were pending codes. I let the Advance Auto guy talk me out of the fuel filter...... I'll change it, thanks.
The fuel filter is cheap and good idea. Particularly if not recently replaced. To remove fuel line connections from filter look for wide area on top part of plastic horse shoe shaped clips. If you push line toward filter while pressing on that wide flat area with small flat screwdriver and pull line toward you it should release. Don't break those clips by attacking them with pliers. They are hard to find short of replacing entire line (pricey). Pull fuel relay or trip reset and run truck till it stalls out to avoid getting a bath/spray in eyes with gas.

I think he has a different setup on the fuel filter......he needs a 5/16 tool to remove it.....
I doubt it is the coilpacks too.......it sounds like you should change the air filter. check the intake for blockage and clean the MAF with crc maf cleaner per instructions. After that you still might need a new MAF....make sure everything on the intake is tight.......your evap should be another issue......look for leak/bad hoses, also there is a valve around the canister that can be cleaned......the evap system is pretty simple...
it is always a good idea to change the fuel filter, especially on an older truck
I don't know if you've done this already but have you pulled the MAF sensor and cleaned it? Also, the TPS could be going bad; that is what happened to me, when I replaced the TPS, everything went back to normal.
Since last post I replaced the fuel filter, two hoses, cleaned MAF sensor and checked all hoses. Air filter is new, haven't done anything with TPS YET. I think I'll drive it to work tomorrow and see what happens. Don't know if I've found the problem yet, but it runs better. Thanks for the help, let you know what happens.
Bidwell that is such a great idea I've just got finished digging in the trash to find the old filter...... don't know why I didn't think of that, anyway it's very HARD to blow through. That's a good thing....not sure that was all of the problem, but I made it to work and back home without spending any time dead on the side of the road, thanks.

I don't know if I should call this an update or a different problem...... truck has been running great until this morning. I got about two miles from home and it fell dead in the road again. This time I was at the top of a long hill and let the truck coast down the hill in fifth gear, it started three or four times for just a split second then die again. After sitting on the side of the road for about five minutes fired up with a cloud of grey smoke and a strong raw gas smell. Died two or three times before I got home..... any guesses where to start first???

what year is the truck and what engine do you have?
Did you ever do a pressure test to see if in spec? Also others have mentioned a sock type mesh filter on pump in tank. Maybe that is partially clogged .How low was the fuel level when it occurred?
The truck is a '96 2.3, I haven't done a pressure test ..... the truck started right up tonight and ran fine, but I didn't let it run that long. I'd taken my daughter to school, went to Lowe's before I left for work, in other words the truck had been running about half an hour before it quit.
