ignition question

I just put a pushbutton ignition in my '86. I ran a new wire from the ignition switch to the starter solenoid, and attached the wire to the "S" post on the solenoid. I was hoping that with this setup, when I pushed the start button, with the key in the ON position, that it would start. But I have to have the key turned all the way to the START position, and then press the button, and it starts. What do I need to change to make it work?

Thanks,
TM

ignition question

There are several ways of doing this, my old 76 had a starter button, because my ign switch had failed.

I belive i had a hot wire running to the positive side of the battery, to the button, then ran another wire out to the S terminal on my solenoid.

All i had to do was flip the key to the ON position and hit the starter button, and she fired right up.

Then again, you might be able to run a wire to the coil, to the button, then the hot to the switch, and a third wire to the solenoid.

But i'm not sure how this would work.

HTH.
