mine there was no sign of a bearing and it wore the outer shaft so i had to replace that too. the bearing kit costs <20 bucks if that is indeed the problem. the axle shafts kinda flop around if the bearing is bad
That really sounds to me like something in the drive shaft or the pinion side of the differential. It is too fast to be on the ring side of the diff or in the wheel, axle or hub. I would say that the best thing to do at this point is going to be to drop the front drive shaft and check the double cardon joint and the pinion yoke for play.
i let this post sit for a little while, and still haven't got the problem figured out... all the u-joints are good... the sound (metalic clinking every time the wheel goes around, and the clink speeds up as i accelerate) comes right from where the diff is, and only does it when in 4x4. one thing that i noticed that may be a factor (don't really know a whole lot about this topic) is that when i "lock" the hubs (warn), they click out of unlock, but no click when "locked". Would this be of concern???
Your description here really sounds like a bad ring gear. If you haven't already, you've got to get the cover off the diff housing. It's a really simple job.
