Don't misunderstand the laser dot, it does not read that spot, the red spot only indicates about the center of the area being read. The beam from the tip of the thermometer is cone shaped, the further away from the surface, the larger the area being read. There is normally a diagram on the side of the gun which will show the angle of the beam and the size of the area at a certain distance. You need to be very close to an accurate reading.

my sisters 97 explorer v6 has these same symptoms. we had changed her fuel pump and the engine would sputter uphill and have a very poor idle. we did leave the tank down and semi exposed a couple nights. one night it might of rained but I shoved plastic bags to plug the openings in the tank. (total idiot, I could of sealed it better while waitin for part). this only started happening After we changed the pump. we changed fuel reg. and filter before pump.
Could it be the water is still in the tank ? or should I start getting some codes such as new o2 sensor and possible coil. I can only imagine how savage water in a tank could
