1997 and earlier diesel trucks equiped with vacuum power brakes--Low/creeping pedal:
Many owners have complained of a low or creeping brake pedal on their trucks, often mistaken for a bad master cylinder or Rear ABS valve. If the condition occurs after the vehicle has come to a stop, and no other brake concerns are found, (worn or out-of-adjusted brakes, cocked pads, or hydraulic problems) the condition is normal and the result of the vacuum pump replenishing the vacuum inside the power booster. Ford has developed a Zero-Loss Travel brake booster to correct this condition if the customer finds it unacceptable. This part is only for use on diesel-equiped trucks--P/N F5TZ-2005-CA--and is not a service replacement; it must be ordered by the part number, not vehicle application.
This condition is similar to the low brake pedal concern on all 1995 F-series that required a larger-diameter master cylinder:
Still make no sense at all? I guess I was just talking out my tail pipe huh?
High % of this comes from the driver, weak vac pump combo.
If you keep pressing and releasing the pedal in a short period of time at idle
some trucks can deplete the vac faster than the pump can make it.
Pedal still will go hard. The driver will feel the normal pressure
as if the pedal is falling and its not. Its do to it being harder than the norm.
Very true. That's how my 94's original booster was. If I pressed and released it more than once it would be on the floor but it would hold. It was scary in traffic. I put a 97 booster on to fix that. It stays right where I adjusted it now. If you have a weak vac pump and or any other problems it can get pretty serious.
That other problem with the brake cams was also present on mine when I got it. Luckily I had a good teacher at my First Ford job. I've seen that on so many pickups when a customer came in saying their master cylinder was bad. I made it a routine to always clean, lube and adjust the rear brakes before going to far with it. That only paid .2 hours so they rarely said no. That should be the first part of any brake diagnosis on this type of system unless it's got an obvious leak or something.
To all others, I wasn't bashing Rick, not in any terms. He helps alot, equals lots of beans. I, on the other hand, aways need help, therefore no beans. That's what I was saying, period. Rick is a asset to this forum, sorry I'm not good at expressing it.
