I have an old 78 bronco 168000 miles, im going to pull the motor, because it needs some work. i have to replace the fly wheel and the oil pan, and i was going to do a few other things like the oil pump, and rear main seal, i was wondering, what would be reccomended to do to this motor while i have it out?
Hehehe... that's a fair response there Stuntman albeit a bit extreme.
Welcome to FTE and the Big Bronco Forum, darkpurple. We will do our best to get you the most accurate info we can.
If you are going to the trouble to actually PULL the engine, consider replacing as many gaskets and seals as you can. I mean, its a 33 year-old engine after all. Front and rear mains are a good idea with it on a stand. Check timing chain slack and replace if necessary. It really depends on how crazy you want to get with the project. This would be the time to clean and/or replace a lot of worn components both on the engine and in the engine bay. And don't put that beast back in there without dressing it up maybe in a new coat of paint.
Stuntmanfyke's comment is based on a common swap that folks do with the 78-79's The bell-housing bolt pattern is the same for the 351m, 400m and 460 engines. Since the 460 was available much later in production than either of the stock engines that came in the 78-79 Bronco, many opt to replace them with the 460 which was available well into the fuel injection era so consequently, much newer components are available for them.
And when you start looking at cost, sometimes its worth the few more dollars for the 460 swap. Especially depending on what your all doing to the stock engine, if it's already coming out it's at least fair to start comparing.
it really depends on what your doing with the truck...the wife opted to keep the 400 and beef it up, my truck got a buit 460...and the supercab is getting a 6.97.3 turbo deisal 5spd setup...the wife drive the bronco twice a week and wheels it regularly... it'll get 37X12.5 hummer radials later this year... my truck runs 44s and is wheeled hard most trips... it'll get 43X14R17 swampers when they faze out the 16.5 rims & tires..it all depends on what you wanna spend and what your gonna do with it...
thank you guys for the advice, i have considered the 460 swap, but i dont think thats happening. i have everything disconnected, and i am waiting for my friend's engine jack to get the engine out. thanks again ill be doing lots to this engine so ill keep you guys posted if i need any more help
