Supercharger idea

He guys,

I have recently stumbled upon a technology called Vortex Tubes.

These tubes have no moving parts, but with around 80psi of air pressure, can seperate the air into a hot and cold stream.. with the cold stream being below 0 F. Of Course the inlet air temp has a great deal to do with this also

My question is this, why couldn't someone rig up an air tank, and get a few of these to act as a sort of rechargeable supercharger?

it would integrate the intercooler and the supercharger into one unit, you could even put a clutched compressor on the engine to keep the tank up to pressure..

but with 80 psi out of each, how would i determine the overall boost psi on the engine? too much of course would blow it up..

anyone care to comment?

Mickey Tompson did do sime work on this in the 70's drag racing. It did work to some degree, but had given up on it and went to a normal supercharger. My guess would be getting the mixure right was a pain.

Those are so lame! I've seen those a few years ago. It's a total scam, they do nothing. It's suppose to create a vortex that in theroy would create a more focused and non turbulent airflow.

But they add maybe 0.25 hp extra.

i am not talking about tornado air circulators, i mean industrial
vortex tubes..

they are proven to work, just not sure if they could be used for such an application

The basic laws of thermodynamics state that energy cannot be created or destroyed. It takes energy to run the compressor to pressurize the air. It would work for very short bursts but would not work for longer times. The amount of air an engine consumes is more than any reasonable air compressor can deliver. A small block at high rpm will comsume about 500+ cfm. By supplying some of that air the engine would have to work less and therefore have a little more power.

The vortex tubes use the compressed air to cool electronics and stuff by cooling the air through expansion.

NOS (nitrous oxide) is used for short burst of power by providing a cooled charge with excess oxygen.

I agree with Brian. Nitrous would be much more effective. However, if someone wanted to do this, maybe it could be charged from an air brake system? Just throwing out another wild idea...
