Well took the EXPY to a transmission shop with over 20 years experience to have the tranny drained and changed along with the transfer case. That was yesterday, today I am told I may be looking at possibly a 1200.00 bill. MUCH metal shavings in the pan, but wasnt really exhibiting any problems. he said it may be simple, as clutches, or more in depth. Very disappointing to have a vehicle with only 40,000 miles, a 36,000 dollar vehicle at that need a tranny overhaul, or have ANYTHING overhauled at that young age or price..Thhink I'll strap the kids to the roof of my escort wagon and leave the EXPY in the drive, should be safe there...
If the transmission was working ok I would have them just fill it up and then you keep driving it until it develops. No real sense fixing it til it's broken
Its had a bump, not necessarily a slip, but a bump, every since I have had it.. I am getting married in June, And My soon-to-be-wife (who drives it mostly now anyway) will be driving it, plus many 5-8 hour trips planned for the summer. I suppose if theres even a Hint of a problem its best to do it now before the summer rush hits, and I really dont wish to worry about problems with her driving it with the kids in it and such.. Im just not very trustworthy of people and shops im not familiar with. My Step-father is the service department manager wt Wilson Ford in WV , has been there for nearly 30 years, so when we take the XPY to WV in a couple of weeks, Ill try to have him check it out to see if this guy was on the up and up..SHall see..still love the vehicle, just frusterated!
But I have only had the vehicle for 45 days, and living on rough roads it was hard to notice the problem.. So now noticed, its out of warranty.. OH well. its only money right? :-)
Gotta agree with Racerguy. There will ALWAYS be metal shavings in a transmission pan. Many tranny shops like to use these "findings" as scare tactics to sucker unsuspecting motorists into their trap.
At the very least, get a second opinion and make sure whatever shop you choose is in excellent standing with the BBB.
Clutches very burnt, fluid was very burnt also.. Yes I agree, shavings very normal, but he said there were ALOT more than usual in there.. I dont know, Im stuck, in a new area Ive only lived in for 1 1/2 months, so dont know any reputable mechanics for the work I dont do myself.
FWIW------My 2000 4x4 EB started to give me signs of a tranny/binding when making slow turns. I brought it in last year and after a "test" ride the so called mechanic said it was juast the 4 wheel drive kicking in because it sensed a wheel speed differential. Well,I knew he was wrong and also have the extended warranty. Well after spending $300 for Red Line tranny/rear end/front axle oils and another $340 for a billet Mag Hytec extra capacity tranny pan I went to my favorite tranny experts to change oils. He showed me an abnormal amount of metal filings in the pan and said it was bad. He put pan back on and stock oil in. End of story is tomorrow I pick up my Expy (47,000m) with a rebuilt transfer case which was the problem. I figured that 12,000m ago~~~~~but they wouldn't listen.
The metal shavings might just be from the tranny break-in period. I would refill it with some synthetic ATF (Redline or Mobil 1) to slow down any possible deterioration and drive it normally.
