Your going to need to find a used engine to rob the crankshaft from IF you need a crank, but I very, very seriously doubt you need a crank.. I think you will find that you probably don't want to buy a new one.. Here is a screen shot from partsguyed's website. You can get it new from him, but it's not cheap anywhere you go.
I just can't believe its the crank if you're driving it. It's gotta be something else like has been mentioned. And for some reason it is the crank, more than likely you're going to need more than a crank...
Yeah, ouch is right. I think you need to start looking for anything and everything that could be wrong besides the crank.. Then again a new harmonic balancer is around $450, so hope its not that.. Upgraded billet flexplates are around $700 IIRC... Not sure how much an OEM flexplate costs.
there has been next to zero issues with cranks in a powerstroke, come on, it aint no dmax! LOL ill go with flex plate...but you never no untill you get in there.
Yeah, I think I've only heard of one broken crank in a 7.3L PSD.. Heck, the p-pumped PSDs are running stock cranks over 1000hp.... why would one just break in a dead stock truck?
The only way I can see a crank breaking is if a main bearing went bad and the crank was wobbling around in there but if that was the case it would be throwing rods and smashing pistons into valves and you wouldn't be able to run it. I would be shocked if it actually was a broken crank.
Whats your oil pressure? If you broke a crank, spun a bearing, etc. your oil pressure would be REALLY low! That being said I've seen engines (not diesels) running just fine with no more than 5psi oil pressure at RPMs.
Oil pressure didn't seem to be low. WHen he pulled the filter to see if there was metal in it, he noted the oil didn't have a burnt smell and seemed clean.
It's still surgury but I can only hope I would get in there and only find a spun bearing!
Question for everyone. Is it possible the crank is in the process of breaking in half and that's why it was getting louder and louder as I was in the driveway? Or could it be broken is a spot that would still support the crank enough to still spin?
Broken Crankshaft = shrapnel, ie chunks hanging out the side of the motor, holes from flying debris in the oil pan and so forth. It is probably the worst catastrophic failure that could happen to your motor. Even if it was cracked there is so much force going on there it would fly apart. especially in a diesel 18.5:1 compression. I have heard a lot about this flex plate issue I would look into that. Im not a diesel expert but I have seen alot of blown up motors in my drag/street racing days and a broken crank is always A violent end to any engine. Youd be lucky to save the heads off of it if that were the case.
Here's how I'm going to approach this and please chime in if you think I'm off.
I'm hearing:
Flex Plate - mine is fairly new 30 - 40k and installed by the dealer but the tranny would have to be dropped to get everything else out AND I have to pull the valve body on that (it sticks on the 3-4 shift) so tranny comes out.
Harmonic Balancer/Crank Pulley - that would have to come off to get to the crank.
Soooooo if it's one of these parts, I replace it and thank my lucky stars. If not I keep going till the crank is out and see if there is any other real big damage.
