337 flathead RH head

I'm looking for a RH head from a late 1950 or '51 F-7 or F-8. It's the one with the external water bypass pipe coming out of the front of it. It's the last part I need to complete the engine in my '50 F-7 Coleman 4X4. Somebody must know where one is hiding? Help!

I got the post mixed up and replied to you in the F8 dump thread.
I got a friend that does big buck shop work. He is one of those that
comes up with everything. He mainly does work on vehicles that do not
exist. Comming up with a head should be play school for him Ill go see him.

Let us know when you find one

Is this something specific to the F-7/F-8? (just my own curiosity)

(Side note: Do not discuss prices in this thread, if you have something to offer, send CHUCK a PM or email and discuss it there - Post a "I have what you want" here in the thread, and then take it to PM/email. Once a deal is arranged, or falls through, post back here saying what happened (again, no prices).)

Chuck~
I've run across at least 2 F7/8's this past fall going back thru a couple of good ol' salvage yards, trying to turn up some more 20" 5x8 rims. (Actually I meant to do a post of the pics in the 48-60 site and got de-railed.) And I know of a 3rd if it hasn't been scrapped yet - yard was full of large trucks (100's) for years and all of a sudden almost all are gone. It will be a bit before I can head back up (snow / sold my tow vehicle), but I will as soon as I can. He's got an Eaton 12V 2pd with 5x8 sitting waiting. So keep us posted on your status if you find one.

Is there any way to know (other than obvious visible crack) if a head is bad before pulling it from the truck, any signs to look for to save pulling effort?

The F-7/8 Lincoln 337 flathead was only made from 1948-51. I need a RH head from a late '50 or a '51.

Bob,
Flathead heads in general are pretty tough, but cracks are certainly a possibility. The only thing I would do before pulling one is to look for evidence of freezing elsewhere on the engine (water in the oil, cracks in the side of the block, etc.) I don't have any bad heads on any of my 337's. I just want to add the bypass pipe system that came out in late '50. My F-8 came with the setup on it, so I'm all set there. My F-7 is a pretty late '50, but not late enough, because it had the early heads on it. I found a bunch of NOS lefts, but nobody has any rights!

Okay Chuck, thanks for the clarification. I thought those slabs of iron, called heads, were pretty stout. My only flattie experience is with 239 / 255. Only 337 is looking at underhood or on a stand and didn't know if maybe they had their own quirks. I looked at my parts guide, but no pics of a 337 with the extra outlet on RH head. I take the port is just just under the water outlet. I've looked at a number of fire trucks (which reminds me of another 48-50 F7/8 sitting in the weeds) and they seemed to have extra engine plumbing and tanks on the front of the engine.

I'll keep you posted once I can head out to go pickin'.

Bob,
FYI, the bypass pipes are on both heads. Look in the 1949-51 Shop Manual, "E" series engine section. There are several good pictures of the setup in there. I can use a left pipe as well. I found some NOS rights, but no lefts. I can make it if I have to, but finding an original would be nice.

Can you get me more information about it? As crazy as it sounds, it may be worth negotiating for if it has the later engine and an auxiliary trans.

8EQ-6049-B .. Cylinder Head-Cast Iron-Right (Passenger) Side.

Use for engine with original equipment external water by pass. ID marking 8EQ-B marked on top side of head.

No FoMoCo Dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any.
---------------------------------------------------
8EQ-6049 .. Cylinder Head-Right (Passenger) Side.

NOS PARTS SOURCE in Olathe KS has ONE = 913-220-5746.

Note: Knowing that Ford changes (replaces/updates) part numbers more often than women change their minds, I thought if I dropped the head's part number suffix, I might get better results.

I do not know if this head is different than 8EQ-6049-B .. because it is not listed in the 1948/56 Ford Truck Parts Catalog. Neither is 8EQ-8548 .. see below.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8EQ-8548-B .. Radiator By Pass Water Tube-Steel.

NORTZ & VIRKLER FORD in Lowville NY has ONE = 315-376-6594.

CARPENTER NOS OBSOLETE PARTS in Concord NC has ONE = 800-476-9653.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's another example of Ford changin' the part number...

8EQ8548 .. Radiator By Pass Tube.

GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH has ONE = 800-543-4959.

LINCOLN OLD PARTS STORE in Clearwater FL has FOUR = 727-445-7551.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
8EQ-8549 .. Water By Pass Tube / 3/4" O.D. approx 12 1/2" long-curved with flange.

NORTZ & VIRKLER FORD has ONE.
