The guys that have that finished the big 3 upgrade, batt to alt, bat to ground, and bat to engine block ground (I think) did you add a fuse in line for the batt to alt and if so what size fuse? And did you leave the oem wiring in place after the new wire?
Just getting ready for the new stereo upgrade and want to do this at the same time.
The other question I have: does it matter if I run the power cable from battery inside the cab or outside along the rear heater lines? I plan on putting my amp in the back jack area and want to run the power cable outside in a split loom zip tied to the rear air lines. Even have space to go inside between the lines going in thru the cab.
Well after TONS of reading on numerous sites, it looks like the fuse should be to the size of wire one uses. The 3 are alt to battery, and yes it should be fused, batt to ground, and engine block to chassis (and some say you can use the alt mounting screw because it is grounded to the block thru the case.) Pretty much leave the old wiring in place, and either piggy back the length and locations, or to new grounding pnts.
It would be interesting on the opinions of running the amp power down the outside along the rear air lines tho. For the most part I think that is the way I will end up going as I dont see that being a problem, and no different that the oem wiring running back there for the trailer wiring. Protected in a loom and tied off to stay put. I will update that tho in another thread with install of stereo as that comes along, and hopefully can take pics along the way.
yeah i dont see a issue with the amp wiring either. i install liftgates...ect and we run power cables from under the hood all the way to the rear of flatbeds with no issues. just loom it and sucure it.
Seach SpringerPop's posts regarding this subject over in the 7.3L forum. He's posted quite a bit of info regarding the charging system, batteries, etc.
Ok, this is now done. Hopefully this comes up when someone searches for it. More photos in my album.
I used 4 awg wire because that is what I had in for the new amp install. Blue cable is off alt and is fused before the battery. Silver cable is engine block to body ground. 3 rd cable from battery to body ground and is a short 8" pc. The 4th pc is under the truck linking the body to the chassis. Did this last night and all is working great.
Will be hard to get any comparison. The stereo is still stock. Still waiting for pcs and while I had some time I thought I would upgrade the wiring so I don't have problems. With the lights all on up front I never had any power issues.
I don't get the obsession with upgrading charging systems. I never upgraded any alts. or alt. wiring when I did stereos and never had problems. Even our work trucks that run up to 9 electric motors all day long run on stock stuff.
While in my situation with a moderate stereo going in the stock wiring would have been adequate. I could see with the high thumping sound you would need to upgrade to get the proper current flow to and from the amps.
Kinda like my 08 power mirrors. The stock ones were good, and are boxed up, the stock shocks were ok, the stock stereo and speakers were ok, and the rest of the list is below, but now all the above are WAY better and probably over kill in most situations, but that is ok.
I had the time, the money and I enjoyed learning about all that fun stuff while doing it, plus the peace of mind is priceless.
