steering questions

just got my hands on a beauty of a truck a 78 f150 300 4.9 1 bbl auto body is not bad considering age few minor problems leaks and such but i have a question about steering looks to be a geer box not p/s opened the fill chamber and was dry added 90 w gear oil as per manual nothing has changed with the play in the steering when you drive the vehicle its very sloppy and you can just about move the wheel 8-12 inches before it responds what dor i need to look at and how do i check tie rods and steering anyway all help appreciated being i have no clue about adjusting steering would like to take a crack at it before i get raked over the coals by my local mech ........thanks

steering questions

See if there is a rubber rag joint between the gear box and the steering shaft. They are a typical cause of slop. Welcome to the site.

If the steering box was dry check for wear there first. Hit the obvious points first where you see a problem. Jack the truck up and have somebody move the wheel and look for lost motion. Pry on everything to see if anything moves in a way it shouldn't.
