My 7.3 2000 F3 50 with automatic transmission I had a flashing overdrive light check my transmission fluid it was full and not burnt drove about 10 miles had one shifting problem at red light, and then pulling the hill with my camper on it the transmission fluid just dumped out. Pull the transmission out when taking the TC off the shaft the transmission seal was loose and came out with the TC. I think the transmission pump is clogged and cause the seal failure? So my question is do I just buy a pump and replace the seal and put it back together or do I bring it to a transmission shop for $2400-$3400, and is buying a transmission pump off the Internet reliable option . Any help would be much appreciated thank you and advance .

Have you taken the pump apart to see if it is damaged? The flashing light means the computer found something wrong. You might have been able to prevent the failure by reading the codes and acting on what it was telling you.

You may need a transmission shop to get you a pump.

That code means the torque converter isn't locked when it should be locked. That can be caused by a bad seal in the input shaft, a stuck torque converter clutch control valve in the valve body, or a bad torque converter.

My F250 4R100 just failed. It would not shift into overdrive anymore and actually happened while I was towing my bumper pull travel trailer. Got it to a reputable shop and the owner did diagnostics on the transmission and told me that it needed an overhaul. I was a little puzzled as to why the transmission was shifting fine 1 -3 and the fluid was not burnt or showed any signs of internal damage. Well I left it with the shop and 2 days later got a call stating that there was a bolt associated with the overdrive that had come loose causing the bands on the overdrive to burn. So for $2400 I'm getting a full rebuild, new torque converter (lower stall), shift kit and a few other mods that help extend the life of the transmission plus with a 2 year nationwide warranty. The reason I posted this is because I looked at dozens of threads and saw dozens of problems but none really stating what had actually been the cause of the transmission failure so here is what was wrong with mine.

That's probably the overdrive feed bolt. But it didn't burnt the overdrive bands, since there are no overdrive bands in a 4R100. There is an overdrive clutch, and that's what failed.

Yes. The shop owner said he has never seen that happen before and he's been in business for quite some time. Thanks for the correction.

This question is for Mark. I had that 4R100 rebuilt and the shop replaced the torque converter with a 2648RV and installed Trans Go shift kit T36165E. Transmission works fine so far, BUT doesn't shift like it did when I got the truck. When I got the truck it had a Transcommand on it which I promptly disconnected. I got Mike at 5Star to sell me some tunes and a SCT X3. Programmed the truck and the firm shifts came back, to the point it was barking 2nd and 3rd gear when you had your foot in it. Now it is soft shifting with what appears to be lag between the gears especially at higher throttle. Any ideas as to why? Put the tune back in so it should be back to where it was before the OD failed but it doesn't seem to have made a difference.

It's hard to say what it is with tunes in and out and an aftermarket shift kit.

What does the fluid look and smell like? Red, brown, or black? Does it have a burnt odor?
