I have a 1966 F250 with the straight 6 - 240engine. THis morning when I started it I heard something spinning out but the noise stopped and it ran fine. Started again and ran fine a few hours later. Now when I try to start it it just whines or revs but the crankshaft and fan aren't turning. I can move the crankshaft with a socket so it's not completely seized. My guess is the the timing gears have stipped some teeth, but was wondering if it could be anything else before I start taking it all apart.
Anything suggestions will help....
Hi, you actually posted in the V6 forum, but no big problem.
Will try and help anyway because it sounds like your problem is not a specific inline 6 issue.
If I understand you correctly, you turn the key to start and you hear a grinding noise and the engine does not turn over.
If that is correct, sounds very much like a problem with the starter bendix gear or worn/missing teeth on the flywheel.
When the starter spins up, the bendix drives out engaging the teeth on the starter gear with the teeth on the flywheel to turn the motor over.
If those teeth are damaged, they don't engage properly and you get grinding and sporadic turn over of the engine.
Not a huge deal, especially if it is just the starter.
