I am wanting to upgrade my headlights from the stock sealed one piece units to the newer style ones with removable bulbs. Question is what years will work on my 84 with the turning lights below the headlights and not on the side. Did they make the removable bulb style headlights in 85 and 86?
Those weren't available on the 80-86 trucks. There is a kit you can buy to change that though. It is two housings that look like sealed beam headlights but have a hole in the back to accept an H4/9004 style bulb. You simply install them in place of your old sealed beam and you are done. You dont even have to modify the wiring harness. Some autoparts stores carry them, mine used to but doesn't anymore. I had some on an 86 F-250 I used to have.
at $35 each they're a little pricey... and to use 9004 you'd need to change the plugs. They use a D shaped plugin with pin terminals instead of blades.
Ouch, I paid $40 for a set but that didn't include bulbs. I could be wrong on the bulb type, as the kit I got was an H4 conversion. There is another one of those bulbs that looks exactly like an H4, I thought it was a 9004. There weren't as many bulb options for the H4 so I found a similar looking bulb with the same plug that had more options. At the time I wanted to run silverstars and they weren't available in an H4.
I did the relay mod at the same time with 10 AWG wire to each light.
When Silverstars came out in ran the ones in the picture, but I now run SilverStar Ultra bulbs.
The APC headlights were about 40 dollars each, with no bulbs when I got mine.
And I need to find some new ones, the APC housings are getting rather old and are starting to crack.
Mine were a pretty heavy plastic, I only had them for a couple months before I swapped a 92-96 front clip on that truck so I'm not sure how well they held up. The looked good but the light dispersal was a bit choppy. They weren't dangerous to drive with by any means but the light pattern just wasn't very even.
Thanks for that bulb number Dave, I always forget which bulbs I used when this topic comes up.
