well i believe that i have gotten closer now. after figuring out that i had a bad compression gauge, i went and bought a new one. the motor is just heads and block and nothing else. removed all spark plugs and did a total compression check again.
cylinder # 1,2,3,6,7,8 all were 145-148
cylinder #4,5 were 176-177
my guess is that the 6 low cylinders are probably too low, there for causing a low vacuum reading. next step is probably to remove the heads and get them checked out. i really hope that it is not rings. i do not want to get that deep
would wrong cam timing cause any of this? i had the timing cover off 2 months ago but not sure if i took the timing set off but i might have. i have slept since then
as of now it might total $800 due to discounts i get at local napa. i expect maybe $200 more, plus by the time i am done it will be practically a new truck with no truck payment.probably $600 of that is just stuff that needed to be replace, the rest is just trying to figure out the problem.
alright. finally got to work on the truck. did a compression test dry and wet one some. here results
#1 - 155 d
#2 - 160 d
#3 - 140 d, 140 w
#4 - 180 d
#5 - 179 d
#6 - 155 d, 155 w
#7 - 130 d, 130 w
#8 - 156
well there are some numbers that are too low and didnt change when i did a wet test. So, hopefully it is in the valves.
On a positive note, i inspected each cylinder. you can still see the cross hatching, i pull out the micrometer and checked them and came up as 4.060. rebuilt by PO so good for me. i am taking heads to the machine shop probably for a valve job unless you have some other suggestions
i think its awesome that your actually trying to fix it instead of doing what everyone else does and just scrap it. I rather keep an old truck running then buying a new one. Alot of people wouldnt go to the extent you did and come on the internet and try to figure it out. Hopefully it runs great when you get done.
well while i am at it, i have installed a new speedometer drive and drive gear, pulled the short block out and left the tranny and transfere case in. found out that the motor is a jasper engine, bored .060. i have my pros and cons about jasper but i will take it. going to but new rear main and oil pan gasket, new flywheel, clutch, slave cylinder, new motor and tranny mounts, then drop it back in and call it a weekend
took the heads to the machine shop today. he told me he hates all jasper engines. i explained to him what all was going on, and told him what advice i am getting from this forum. he believes it is wore out valve guide or valve job. so we will see within a week and i will keep you guys posted
machine shop called me and said that the heads are perfect. he said to check the cam. so friday night i gonna take it out and check it out. any other ideas what it could be???
timin chain has more that 1/2 in slack, i am going to buy a new one tomorrow. took the cam out and it has me questioning it. if machine shop is open, i taking it there tomorrow to have it checked. but probably just put in a different cam.
