Anybody got a set of auto hubs laying around? With as many people that have replaced the auto with man, surely somebody has a pair on the shelf. I have a bad hub and need a replacement in the worst way. Truck has been parked for 6 weeks and I need to get it back on the road. Dont bother trying to convert me to man hub, I have had both and prefer the auto's. PM me if you can help and we will work out a deal.
I've got one whole one that is good and one that is missing a few parts. They are off our 94 f350. I am pretty sure the ones on our 250 are complete but I need to go check. PM me if interested ok.
Take out autos.....Throw in nearest trash can...Replace with manuals hahaha best write up around. Ive never had good luck with them. Mine are locked in right now and wont release...Waiting to do my dana 60 so i can put my manuals in.
Autos are fine if you maintain them right. And NEVER NEVER NEVER let a garage, not even a Ford dealer, touch them. It is rare as siamese twins that they ever put them back together right.
The trick I learned for lubricating them good is to soak them in a bucket of synthetic gear oil a couple times a year then let them drip dry. Seriously. I never had one mess up till I bought this 94 and some nut at Ford put them together wrong.
Mine were manual when I bought the truck used. I don't know if it was manual or auto from the factory. If it was auto from the factory....is there a switch on the dash or something that I can see? How do you engage auto's from the drivers seat?
Thanks!
The best way to engage them is to take your foot off the gas so you are positive the rear tires aren't spinning and pull it into 4 hi. It's best to do it at 55 or under the first time. After that you drive normal and can shift in or out when you want. They will unlock themselves the first time you drive in reverse with the shifter in 2 hi. Just always be certain that the rear tires are NOT slipping when you shift it in to 4 wheel. That's bad on everything.
Stupid company security decided I can no longer access this site on my work computer, that will put a cramp in my surfing, haha.
I have always had good luck with auto's. This is the first time I've even had a set apart.
RRanch, excellant idea to soak in gear oil, dont have to disassemble that way. Will send pm in a few minutes.
I've been doing that since the 80's. We had these antique governor assemblies on my first ship. Big spinning flyweights on top of the turbine. I got it from those. The pms card said to disassemble and grease them but they always stuck. We soaked them in gear oil instead and rigged up drip cups to keep them wet. The grease just soaked up all the dust and dirt coming down the vents.
Just clean them good in diesel fuel then blow dry and drop in the can of gear oil. Recently I started using mystic. It's almost as sticky as bar and chain oil. I don't let them drip dry for too long. Just a few minutes. That little bit of oil mixing with the grease on the bearings isn't gonna hurt anything at all.
