i bought the truck and the housing was broke on the end where the transfer case bolts on so i had it welded and it didnt hold pullin to heavy of a trailer i guess
I replaced mine 2 years w/ parts from the dealer. I think it was under $300 for everything. There are a few extra parts that make it easier to just replace then reuse:
Case Magnet E7TZ7E290A
Shift rail bearing F81Z7065AA
The msrp on the housing looks llke its around $350 (F81Z7A039AA)
Dont know if the part numbers are 100% correct for your truck since these were for a 01 4x4. The dealer should be abl to verify.
Use gasket maker between the housing not silicone. TA16 is fords p/n
just looked at the manual and it looks like it could be done. Hardest part would be the top bolts. You may have to take the tranny mount off and lower it down. If I remember it is a dry section so you shouldn't have to drain the fluid.
Good luck, here's a couple of pics of what you're dealing with. How the heck did it break? Taking out the x-fer case without getting all the bolts out?
From those pics looks like my x-member is bent to so that might be part of why it broke mine isnt flat under the mount its angled forward maybe the previous owner ran over something.I got the truck for a real good price so i wouldnt mind puttin a new tranny in it but when i puuled it out to be welded it had a reman tag from zf on it and it almost as clean as the one in the pics so evidently not that old so i think it would be a waste to replace it
Interesting.
Have you checked with ZF directly about getting a new housing?
I bought my transmission from Fleet Pride, which is a ZF outlet.
At the time it was $2400.00 for a complete unit, but they also may have access to parts.
