1964 Dash Controls
1964 Dash Controls
To start, I have a 1964 F250 2wd with the 223 Straight-6, 4 on-the-floor, standard cab. My truck has been "modified" in a number of minor ways by the previous owner, which includes the dash controls. I've looked at pictures on these forums of other guys' trucks and there seems to be some variation in regards to the dash and the controls thereof. Some don't even have the Ampere and Oil Pressure gauges, some have a little delete piece on the right side instead of a ****, others have extra ***** that I don't even have spots for, still others have a button above the ignition key...I read guys mentioning emergency flashers, dome lights, etc. So now I don't know what's supposed to be where, so here are my questions:
1) My dash ***** go like this, from left to right: Wipers, Lights, empty hole, empty hole, Choke, Air (heater). So the two "spots" closest to the steering column are mysteries to me. What goes in the two spots on either side of the column?
1 a) Did they have emergency flashers in the 1964s? If so, were they optional? If standard equipment, how do you activate them (i.e. is that one of my missing *****?)?
1 b) How does the dome light work? It's there on the ceiling, but I don't know how it's turned on. There are no switches around the doors and no ***** that might have anything to do with it (i.e. is that one of my missing *****?).
1 c) There is a cigarette lighter fitted into the right-hand hole for now, but it doesn't match the truck's ***** and it's not connected electrically to anything. However, the guy smoked and I'm pretty sure he checked off for the cigarette lighter option. Which hole would that go in? I've also read a few things mentioning a Cigar Lighter option - where would I find one of those, and where would it go? I like me some cigars.
To sum up, I guess I'm kind of asking how a bone stock standard cab dash was set up in 1964, and seeing what I'm missing and going from there.
Thanks for all your help; I'm learning a lot about my truck.

Dash **** order...mine at least
Hey Carefree,
Heres' what my dash **** order looks like on my '66 F250 Custom Cab:
(Custom Cabs have the sweep Speedo Bezel style)
Starting at Left: 1.Lights 2.Wipers 3.Cancer Stick Lighter 4.Hazard Light Indicator 5.Hazard **** 6.Choke 7. Heater Control
For trucks that have air Cond., the **** will be there somewhere too.
Hope this helps
Jason

Thank you! That does help. I guess the cigarette lighter is the correct one, but it's just on the wrong side. But I don't even have a hole for the Hazard Light Indicator, so I doubt my missing **** is for the hazards. Hm. Unless the light indicator came later or just the whole hazard light idea did, like reverse lights did. I thought once that it might be a Throttle/Accelerator ****, but it seems that was just for the V8s. I think.
The hazard light shown is added in 65 and not a factory location for 64 . The kit is an option and mounts in line with the turn signal wiring.
The switch for the flashers is mounted on a separate black with white letters mounting to the bottom of the dash.
The Lighter shown is not correct as it does not have the Lighter bezel. Lighters are optional and this may have been added at the dealer. Looks like a falcon unit. (the correct Black **** and bezel are reproduced).
The lighter used a harness with an integral fuse. Most are missing or gone once the fuse blew and were rewired.
The six common ones shown are the standard layout. All outboard gauges were optional equipment and use a separate harness that ties in to the stock wiring. For 64 the 4th would accept the bezel for the flasher or have a chrome plug.
A black push button above the ignition switch on 65 66 only is for the windshield washer pump. This location in 61 to 64 F100 And 65 66 F250 4x4s and all F350s is for the cowl vent pull. If the truck was equipped with a two speed wiper as an option the switch for the wipers did dual duty as it pulled out and to the left to work the washer pump.
You can occasionally find a blink marker lights switch on the dash if it was swapped out of a larger truck.

My lighter is exactly the same as his, so I assumed it was correct; you said the black **** and bezel is reproduced, but is that functional, or just a "false" bit that fits in the spot? I saw one at Dennis Carpenter's website, but it looks like just the **** instead of an actual lighter.
So I guess the last question is unrelated now, but I think you may know - how does the dome light work?
Thanks for all the info!
CarefreeT I have pics of my 64 Custom Cab Dash if I can figure out how to post them. And my dome light only turns on when I turn my headlamp dash light dimmer switch all the way it will click in position. It did not come with door jam switches but it will get them soon.

[EDIT] Sure as $&!# it works. That's incredibly helpful.

The bezel marked LIGHTER is part of the element (C1TZ15054A), and it was swagged on, so it cannot be removed. I could not find anyone that reproduces it.
The ****, as original, was only sold with the element (C1TZ15052A). Carpenter's part number (C1TZ15052) for the reproduced **** is phony...because it's only the ****.
The correct 1961/66 element is hard to find NOS as Ford replaced it decades ago with first the '67/72, then the '73/79 types, which are different styles and do not say LIGHTER.

The lighter fuse was not integral with the harness...or the socket (though it might appear as such). It was sold by itself.

This fuse is barrel shaped, has one female, one male end. Female end threads onto the lighter sockets male end, then the wire end pushes onto the fuses male end.

Finding the correct 4 way flasher dealer installed kit or the individual parts may be a challenge.
That's an autoparts store replacement lighter **** and element, it's not from any FoMoCo vehicle. If it was from a Falcon, it would have a black **** w/a chrome center and a bezel marked LIGHTER.

Cropduster,
Shoot me an address i have a spare.
And i have a couple of the falcon? ***** that you have pull from Ford trucks. I would wager that the **** is a dealer add on Apperently common on each coast.
Here is the 67 to 72 that has the "Lighter"correct bezel that is held in place by the ****. Item 27
http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/fb/full.aspx?Page=79
And combine it with this **** Item 17

You some times have to move around the box and mix the pieces.

Ford offered dealer installed lighter kits for vehicles that did not come with them as standard equipment. For example:
C5TZ15A044A (replaced C1TZ15A044A) .. Lighter Kit-Includes C1TZ15052A **** & Element, C1TZ15055A Socket, FEW14429A Fuse, Wiring and instruction sheet.
Fits: 1961/66 F100/1100 & Econoline / 1963/66 N/NT500/1000 / 1966 Bronco.
Why would a dealer install an aftermarket lighter kit since the **** & element would not match the rest of the dash *****? I highly doubt any FoMoCo dealer would do so...especially when genuine kits were available.
In the mid 1970's, I bought an all original 1955 Chrysler C-300 (the first of the letter series). The lighter was missing, so I waltzed down to Pep Boys and bought the exact same **** and element you are refering to.
I've been hittin' junkyards and car dealers for over 50 years buying parts (and have owned over 300 vehicles), so I usually can look at something like this, and know from the get go what it's from.
Ha! Got one today...a friend nearby had one!
Thanks for the offer garbz, appreciate it....I'm not actually going to hook it
up...just put it in the dash...I get enough second hand smoke driving around
with ganstakr.
