i have a 1972 f100, it has manual steering and a bearing in the steering column is broken how do i replace it? will i have to take the entire steering column out? and suggestions will be appreciated.
not sure if you have a 2wd or 4x4 if it's 2wd you will have the same upper and lower bearings if 4x4 it has 2 different bearings. easiest way to take the column out is by taking the bolt out of the bottom of the shaft in engine bay where it slips into the first joint disconnect the harness inside and take out the 4 bolts i think it was holding it to the underside of the dash frame and it will come right out may need to pull alittle to break it from the coupler. but here's a thread on my rebuild on my 71 f250 4x4 column this should give you a general idea i'm waiting to get my parts back from powder coating and i'll post pics of the reassembly https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...uild-some.html
Just start taking bolts off untill you find what's broke or the column is removed. Then change the bearing, mine was just poped out, its works better now. Also check the rubber between the column and box.
You still didn't say if it is 2wd or 4wd truck. 4wd have a slip clamp that fits up against the lower bearing and if it slips down a little your whole steeling shaft and s wheel become sloppy like the bearing is broken..There's many online catalogs like LMC you can look through for parts..
