My son and I have been working on a 66 F-250 for him to drive back and forth to school. My son loves the truck and gets a lot of compliments from his friends for having such a unique vehicle.
So far, we have been working on the mechanical issues (brakes, steering, istalling seat belts, etc.) and come up against a fuel problem that we could use some advice on. The truck has been running great for that past 2 years and suddenly it did not want to start without a lot of gas. We changed the fuel filter and gas lines (which seemed to help at first) but now after several days it has the same problem when starting and will sometimes want to die at idle after about 20 mins of running.
Could this be a fuel pump problem? You guys have been a great resource in the past, any advice would be appreciated.
Could be the new filter is plugged again. As for the fuel pump there are several ways to check it. Fuel pressure gauge, Should be around 7lb's. Take fuel line off and pump into a container to see if it it is strong and study. Most important is there fuel in the crank case oil?
There now may be gunk in the carb plugging it.
I have also found that on FE's the intake gaskets can go south without warning causing similar problems.
The intake manifold is what the carb is bolted down to. It then bolts to the heads. The gaskets between the heads and manifold are prone to drying out than sucking vacuum there. Let's eliminate any fuel delivery problems before we trouble shoot that. A see through filter close to the carb is nice for seeing if there is any crap in the fuel system.
Chances are there is some crap in the tank and it's got into the carb.
Again is there any crap in the new filter now?
Thanks for the explanation. Been through a couple of engines in my past, but I just wanted to make sure there wasn't some another gasket in the carb somewhere I should be looking at. We installed the fulel filter between the outlet of the fuel tank and where it hooks up to the steel gas line under the truck. We installed it and the new fuel lines after it started having issues.
The fuel filter looks clean.
Can't check the fuel pressure until my son gets home this afternoon.
Looking in the carb with the engine off jack the throttle a few times and see if the gas is squirting in or just dribbling. There should be two big streams of fuel when ya jack the throttle.
Than there is gas in the carb and the accelerator pump is good. The carb can still have some plugged jets and need a good cleaning. If the fuel pump checks out and no jets plugged in the carb than I would be looking at ignition. Maybe timing?
Does it start and run good at an idle and low RPM's? Than crap out when ya get into it?. This could be a weak pump. As the carb may be running out of gas.
Any way I would check the timing to see if it is where it is supposed to be. Stock timing gears are plastic and it can jump time if they are worn.
Just some things ta keep ya busy till the kid comes home.
Come on Guy's help us out here. I am running out of ideas.
Cal 250 what do you mean by a lot of gas? Do you have to pump it several times before it starts or do you have to hold the accelerator down to keep it running? Have you checked your point gap or better the dwell and timing yet? Its hard to explain this one so bare with me. Slightly hold your hand over the carb as it is running does your RPM drop or raise? Be careful. When it goes to die after idling what do you have to do to get it to restart? OK more stuff to do before your son gets home to check the fuel pump. LOL
Problem seems to be getting worse. Now have to start it with pedal all the way on the floor. Will run for a minute or teo, then start to die. I can keep it going by giving more gas but repeats again when it gets to a low idle. Took it took put some fresh gas in it and it ran ok until about 3/4 way there, then just died when I stopped.
Cam inside to have a cold one....thought that might help.

When it dies does it act like it's running out of gas, or loading up and flooding from too much gas? Black smoke or gas smell when it's running? Sure sounds like a fuel delivery issue...
Does the engine rev up when you hold it to the floor or only increases a lttle RPM? Do you keep pumping the gas pedal to keep it going is that what you mean by giving it more gas?

This sounds like it may be flooding. Float stuck? try rapping on the float bowl with a SMALL hammer to see if the float clears up. This works for me if there is a piece of crud under the needle valve holding the float open. Ya might try pulling the carb and cleaning it and blowing all the jets and ports out with compressed air.
Ya you are right, It's beer thirty. I'll have a frosty with ya.
I'll try that. I agree with most of the posts that is sounds like a fuel issue, and the carb probably needs a good cleaning. May have to take it in to the shop tomorrow for a quick diagnosis since we need to get it back on the road. Wish I had more time to fool with it.
