Charge rate too high?

Hey guys, got a quick ? for ya's.
My mom has a 1999 chevy suburban w/350 engine. Had to replace the battery. Checked the charge rate w/ new battery installed--14.7-14.9vdc. Im wondering if this is too high?? I thought the ideal charge rate was 14.4. I DONT want the battery to cook, then have to replace the new battery AND an alternator. (If Im not mistaken, the voltage regulator is inside the alternator?)

Thanks
Aaron.

Just keep an eye on the water level. If it boils out, be concerned, otherwise it is ok. My Ford tended to put out close to 15v also, but it didnt cause problems.

It depends how cold it is. You need a higher voltage to maintain the battery in cold temperatures.

15v charge rate is not uncommon.

BTW, it's not difficult to open the alternator, (if you decide the charge rate is too high,) and replace just the regulator portion.

I did not know you could do such a thing. I thought once any part of the alternator was failing or dead it was a remove and replace deal. I have heard of doing it on the older stuff, but nothing in my era of being a mechanic. Should any parts store carry what it takes to fix it??

I used to always repair rather than replace. It paid more labor and cost the customer less and it was always a legitimate repair.

It's been years since I have been doing it, but I imagine you can order the needed parts even if they do not have them in stock.

Seems silly to pop for a whole new altenator when all that's wrong is one bad diode or a bad regulator.
