Thumbs down Excursion / Towing Help

New to the site today and looking for help. I own a 2005 Excursion V10 w 373 4wd and I want to tow my 32ft travel trailer Artic Fox. Hitch dry weight roughly 8100lbs max GVW 111000. Tong weight roughly 800lbs.......used to pull easy with 05 6.0 crew diesel drw but after head gasket, fuel coupling and module issues enough was enough at 85k so I sold it for Excursion........great with family of 5 travel but concerned about towing. Local shop is saying add Roadmaster to help with tong weight...hitch will handle sway but am I crazy to think about pulling this big heavy box trailer with Excursion?? Any comments / direction would be appreciated

Welcome to FTE.

Lots of guys tow bigger/heavier than that. There are a few things that will help improve your experience, like rear suspension mods and maybe a gear change, but otherwise you'll do just fine. The V-10 Excursion guys are very helpful.

Cost can be modest but rear end work is a certainty. There's endless postings on this site on the issue. Search for "wandering".

I'm curious - did you investigate many other vehicles before settling on the Excursion? If so, why choose the Excursion?

I have always had Ford diesel trucks...7.3 regcab,7.5 Ext cab and 6.0 F350Crew 4wd / DRW and I had more problems/breakdowns with the 6.0 than the other 2 combined. Family of 5 now and needed the room to travel but also tow in summer camping so no other SUV seemed an option. When the 6.0L ran it pulled well......wife drove and I rode my HD...just have concerns as we did not pull the trailer more than local 60 miles last year...but want to take a longer trip so I want safety concerns.........

I tow a 35ft trailer with a 29ft boat....about 11,000lbs I've been told. Tows like a dream but tongue weight is not an issue with boats! The 454 in the stern is a great counter-weight and 100 gallons of gas right over the axles! I would think airbags with a good weight dist hitch with sway control would be a perfect setup. I just use a solid 15,000lbs tow bar. I don't pull monster hills but the V10 has plenty of power and my transmission temps are always normal. We love our 2003, Mike.

i tow a 32ft keystone laredo, i went a cross the scales at 16000 gross. i pulled it about 4000 miles last year. all i have is the cheep wd rease hitch and a friction sway the dealer gave me wheni bought the camper. i never had a problem with sway on any of my trips. i took the time to set up the hitch fallowing the advise i got off this site. i towed it in 40 mile crosswinds and did not have any problems.

Check my Arctic Fox 32D in signature. I think you will find the hitch weight around 1500 lb--actually, that is good for stability.

Recommend several mods:

V/B springs (same as F250)
Hellwig rear sway bar
Shocks: Bilstein or Rancho9000
New Moog greasable ball joints
RAS on rear OR radius rods/air bags
Load Range E tires set to 75 - 80 psig when towing.

Forest,

I have about the same trailer as you. I use a reese WD setup with friction anti-sway. My truck feels very unstable even just driving down my back roads. I feel like I am driving on ICE or as if the trailer is just pushing me around. I just added Belstien shocks all around along with the rear sway bar and it still feels about the same. Any thoughts on this? Is the main fix that ppl mention with towing the springs or should what I have done helped?

The truck by itself rides and handles better now, but towing still seem unstable/unsafe.

The truck has stock springs with abouot 110K miles. Power for towing with the V10 is no issue.

Thanks

Keith

The TT in my sig is 31ft long and about 9500 lbs with 1200 lbs of tongue weight. I have done the V code springs on the front with a RAS in the rear along with a Helwig sway bar. I use a Reese hitch with the Dual Cam sway control. Tows great after a lot of tweaking. All the mods helped but the RAS was probably the greatest difference. If I had to do all over I would probably just do the V and B code springs and call it a day. JMHO.

Guess I just need to do the springs and get it over with.
