My 99 model has the ashtray in this location. I guess after changing cupholders and adding the ashtray between them on newer models -Ford didn't know how to cover the old hole.

It's for a trash bag. I always thought it was a waist of space. I think they could have put something better there. There isn't even anything behind it, so there is plenty of room for something.

my wife asked that question at the dealer ship when we bought our truck. 3 out of 4 salemen said it was officially known as a purse hook.
I keep waiting for someone to come up with a useful replacment part for that thing.

Having unused ashtray in this location, that that tilts out -I attached power inverter to it. This way I can plug my laptop or cellphone charger there. Pretty good location.
