2001 V10

Hey guys im lookin at gettin a 2001 ford f250 x-cab. It has 83,000 on it and i have some questions. Iv heard bout the v10s blowin out plugs and i was wondering what years had the bad heads? I know 04 has the update but would this 01? Also any other things i should look at on the motor?

Thanks

Lane

If the plugs are installed properly there isn't too much of a problem. My '99 has just under 100K and has never spit a plug. (I gotta stop posting this as I fear I am tempting fate!) I did replace them all following the correct instructions at 75K. These V10s are great motors if properly maintained. I am not sure of which year that Ford did change the thread count for the plugs but I am sure someone else will chime in. My point is to not overlook a great truck because of a fear of plug blowout.

More serious in my opinion is the exhaust manifold studs failing on the V10. If you have to pay someone else to fix them, expect to spend north of a grand to have it done. The only other minor problem area to check is the "Lubricated for Life" ball joints that only last 60K miles or so. I guess I have higher expectations for my truck's longevity than Ford did.

2002 was when higher thread count heads were introduced. However there where changes made in the 2001 and 2000 to help. See the link below. Like ol'yeller said following the proper plug replacement procedure is key and many recommended replacing the plugs at least every 50K instead of 100K like Ford recommends.

While certainly a problem is best fixed when it can be avoided, the Timesert repair for a blown plug is onlly a couple hundred dollars. It just sounds worse than it is.....

My 2000 V10 has 149,000 miles and hasn't blown a plug. I changed out the originals when I got the truck at about 145,000 and all went well.

Lane,

I did not know plugs were a problem until read this thread. I have 99 6.8 v10 F350 DRW SC LB with 336K mi. Changed plugs as recommended by Ford and have had NO problems at all.

The only time the plugs are a problem is if you put them in wrong.
Use Ford plugs and put them in right, they never come out.
