My 2006, 4.2 has been really eradically not starting. Turns over fine ,but will sometimes fire up and tries to run on maybe 2 cylinders, then stalls. Now it won't even do that, nothing. No check eng light or codes. Guess what the thing started up this mornig 7 degrees out and running like a charm.turned off and nothing again. Replaced relay for PCM ,no change, still no codes.
I would follow the diagnostic routine in the Ford or comparable Powertrain and Emissions manual under the symptom or condition (no start). There are so many possibilities. That is the easiest and quickest way to get it fixed right. It's also the least expensive way as you won't be throwing parts at it and hoping that will fix it.
check the fuel pump driver module. It is mounted to a cross member right in front of the spare tires. Lower the spare and check for corrosion between the cross member and the module. They crack and fail.
You can check to see if the coils are firing by disconnecting one of them and installing a test light across the 2 terminals of the wiring harness. Crank the engine and watch for the test light to flash. Same thing for the injectors. If both are ok, I would suspect fuel.
Thanks will do that. Started this 5 months ago but not as bad. would turn over and no fire then 20 secs later it was fine. Happened maybe once a month, thought no big deal.
Wilber, you had it right. The FPDM is cracked in half. Is there any cushioning for these things ? Full of salt and dirt, I cant believe it worked at all. Im going to put some foam underneath it and some rubberwashers on the bolts. Does that sound ok ?
The new one will have a stud you install first then put the module on. this will lift the back of the module off the frame. you won't have any further problems....
