4.2 knocking... need some input

Okay, well I called a dealer in the state, apparently Ford stopped selling their cheap 4.2 short blocks, now its only 2100ish if I want a long block... So... used motors around here are 1500 easily for a motor with 150k+ miles on it.... couldn't I plan on spending a hell of a lot less to have the bottom end bored and honed? I can still get pistons for it cant I? through Summit... and a crank? and have my heads planed... I was thinking if I just pull the motor myself, tear it down, have it bored and honed... and install the pistons and everything above and below myself... It should run me A LOT less should it not? I have never had a motor bored before, how much is it?

And, if all works out, any suggestions on parts replaced/upgraded in the rebuild? Is there an alternative for the oil pump? make it stronger? (i was told the 4.2 has a weak set up with the oil pump)

I would think(unfortunately) that by the time you pulled the engine out, tore it down, transported it to various places such as Machine shop, parts places etc,you would be re-considering the long block.
Taking into account labor charges, parts cost(Crank kit, pistons, gaskets, bearings etc),you will likely ultimately reach or exceed the 2100 quoted.
Dont get me wrong,Im all for "do it yourself" but parts/labor costs have gone out of sight in the past few years making the long block idea much more appealing.
Machine shops(at least in my neck of the woods) have virtually dried up,and ones you CAN find are backlogged, and charge what they wish......my.02

Well, I just woke up and am slow thinking...
Just redoing the bottom end... well it looks like I will have to get the crank turned because I cannot purchase one of them.

So I will get a quote for that price... now what all bearings would I need? forgetting about gaskets and what not... what all would I need for the bottom end? pistons and rings come in a set... main bearings come in a set... rod bearings in a set... annnd... im blanking...

We have numerous machine shops in the area... I can think of 2 in town, and surrounding thats not that far away... atleast 6-7 more? A guy I know just got some heads planed... they were between 50-100 a head... cheaper than what I would have thought

Might be better off to get a rebuilt from Jasper or a rebuilder. (I am not a fan of these rebuilts, but Jasper has a warranty) when you add up on grinding the crank, new bearings, rings, (whats the condition of the cylinder walls??), surfacing the heads, might need a valve job,.......2100 isnt going to be enough

I know if it were me, and I didnt have money, Id try to take the crank out without touching the upper end of the engine, have it turned, and then put in new mains and rod bearings and new oil pump and pick up screen and whatever gaskets. am sure you would have to take timing cover and timing chain off to get crank out, so might as well put a new timing chain in it as well.

If you are sure the top end is good, get a "crank kit",set of rings, timing chain assy, and new oil pump.Hone the cylinders really good, drop the crank kit in it,and put it back together. A crank kit consists of a newly reground crankshaft, and matching bearings.
Just bought a kit for an 01 Grand-Am,and it was around 275.00 with core return.
