Alright, I haven't posted in a while...my truck has been behaving nicely.
But...
On cold mornings/days I get a series of clunks from the rear end area. It only happens on the first movment and when it is cold. Reverse or forward. It's not a frozen to the ground type problem.
The ol' ladys exploder used to clunk a bit w the limited slip. The clutches must've been stuck to each other and needed to go 'round the first few corners first.
Unless the pins the calipers slide on are severely worn and the calipers are slopping around. I did brakes last fall and mine had rust inside of the little rubber boot and the pin didn't move very well. Wear one pad out quick.
That just happened to me the last 2 mornings. This is killing me. Over the last week I've been gathering info on a possible broken exhaust manifold stud plus some other small gremlins ?!@#$. Now this is happening and I just want to slam the door on my head a few times.

If it is your slip joint that is the problem, here is how to fix it. LINK
I've had the same problem with my '97 F-150 since the day that I bought it. Ford swore to me repeatedly that "it's the nature of the beast". Despite FIVE rear-end replacements (gears/internals) from 30,000 to 65,000 miles it continues to this day.
The rear end is still junk (at 187,000) and the clunking has just become a way of life.
Millner_Feed. Awesome link!! Everyone has been saying that it was an easy fix. I guess I was sorta hoping to just grab my grease gun, crawl under and grease it. That's not going to happen thanks to Ford. I should be able to take this on. Thanks for your help.

Forgot to ask. I have some all-purpose grease and some marine grease, will they work? Or do I need some other stuff?
