Hey all!
Haven't been on here in the better part of a few years since I sold my F350 to my brother and ventured to the world of german cars. Well, since, the F350 has been sold to a close friend of the family by my brother and I find myself back in another diesel truck. Hold your breaths, two words I'd never expect myself to be saying describing a truck of mine: DODGE & STOCK. Well, stock for now at least.
Anywho, the real reason for this post is to ask for some help. Just returned from a friend's garage where we've spent the last 9 hours tormenting ourselves trying to diagnose and fix a little problem. 94.5 F350 PSD, ZF5, DRW with a dump body, unknown miles (odo stopped at 174xxx about a year ago). A few weeks ago began with hard starts while hot. First start of the day, even after a 0* night, fires off without a hitch. Subsequent starts are only achieved with (gasp) ether. He's not the sharpest sometimes and I've warned him NUMEROUS times of the dangers of a shot of ether and glow plugs. Plenty of fuel to the schraeder valve. Valve cover wiring harnesses appear in good order, tested ok. Pulled codes and got errors for the ICP. Pulled the IPR off, cleaned it, cleaned the screen, shimmed the FPR. Pulled the ICP, cleaned thoroughly, replaced o-rings. New fuel filter. Glow plug relay checked out. Batteries 3 months old. Starter in fine shape. HPOP seems to be draining back after sitting, usually about an inch low. No change when oil is added to the HPOP.
Truck runs fine once started. Plenty of power and running on all 8. I'm just totally stumped at this point. Anyone thinking of anything I'm missing?
I agree with Chris, looks like the GP's have had it
He's lucky a cylinder didn't fire at the wrong time from the ether on a hot gp and totally hose the engine... ether is ok to use on these trucks BUT you must disable the GP system when you do that...
I don't think its glow plugs. He said it starts fine cold its the hot start that's an issue. Maybe ipr problem? Did you try unplugging the icp and see if that helps?
Man, I really do need to start reading better... my mind must skip around to much in the morning

So, did you replace IPR O-rings at any point and make sure it was good and snug? keep in mind, the IPR is the one under the HPOP, and a bit tricky to get to. like Justin said, sometimes the IPR is related to a no hot start
Tried unplugging the ICP and all that did was throw a CEL and no change. Yes, new o-rings on the IPR on the back of the HPOP and she's good and snug. I meant to say pulled the FPR off of the side of the fuel bowl and cleaned the screen on that.
Forgot to mention in my original rant about the P1280 code it started throwing after the IPR rebuild. Thoughts on this?
How old is the oil and is it full? I would be concerned about that leak down of the hpop. Maybe the gasket under the reservoir is leaking, WAG. But if you fill it and still a hard start, ????
