Hello:
I've purchased my first Ford Explorer in Carmax several months ago (a 99 Explorer XLS) and I love it. It has now about 42K miles.
Two days ago, the ABS light turned on and hasn't turned off since then. I was told that it only can be checked at a Ford Dealership. Is it true?
I called to a near Ford dealership and they gave me an appointment for next week, but I'm concerned because I'm drive the car everyday on the expressway and like to know if it is safe.
Another question: Since it seems to be a brake problem, it is not coverd by the extended guarantee, is it? I got the extended guarantee from Carmax, but I'd like to know if this issue is covered.
Thanks
My understanding, if the ABS light is on it is because some fault is detected in the ABS system. Thus, it is disabled when the light is on. However, you still have full use of your brakes, just no ABS to keep them from locking up in a panic stop.
I had the same problem on my 2000 EXP 4WD. It wasn't a fuse and I took it to the dealer. $27 to test and locate the problem. It was a bad speed sensor. Now I have ABS.
Just had the ABS light up on my 94...... the front right sensor wire had a clean nick in it ..how I don't know.... cause it is tucked in there tight and tied down out of harms way.
Maybe a chuck of ice from the last bad snow storm?
My point: Could be the obvious...if you don't have a code scanner
Many times this is due to a dirty sensor in the rear axle housing. Try removing it, cleaning it off and reinstalling it. It's located in the top of the center section of the differential and is held in by one bolt. It's the only thing in that area that has a wire going to it.
