I have several friends who are not into fixing vehicles at all. I don't have a problem with this at all, infact at times I try and encourage them to look into the hobby and maybe give it a try. hahha
But more times then not these "friends" try and convince me to junk my truck and do something better with my time, I just tell them they need to tell there wives to let them have a hobby, or buy two brass ***** and put them in there pants so they know what it feels like to be a man..hahahahahahahah Anyway I said all of this to ask, do any of you out there have this type of "friends"? If so heres your chance to vent a bit...all in fun that is.
I've got one buddy that actually lives right across the street that's into wrenching. My dad is into old iron, too. It's nice to have somebody to bench race with and hang out in the shop with me when I'm working on something. On the other hand, I do have several other friends that basically do nothing besides watch whatever sport is in season and hang out in the bar. I don't get those guys and they don't get me. Different strokes, I guess. I've never had one suggest that I scrap my junk and join a fantasy football team as the armchair quarterback, though. They wouldn't dare because I'm the guy they call when their family truckster breaks down. Wouldn't be wise to insult the guy that sometimes gets them back and forth to work.
I don't have many friends either. to me they always want you to do major work on thier cars and for free. used to do it all the time and finally set my foot down, go get an estimate at the dealership-bring it to me and I will decide if I can do it for half that. otherwise go away! I got my own stuff! I am not a sports fan of any kind, can't sit for more than a few minutes unless I am researching something about the next step in progress on the truck. Got one coworker that is a grease monkey like me. the others are civil engineers and environmental scientists...nice guys but nothing in common outside of work. one of the guys I work with is into building models out of lego's
he is a little strange....won't tell anyone where he lives either...
I have a few followers but none that i would say really care either way or.
90% of my "friends" are fellow gear heads... a couple own thier own shops (as did I for a short time). I have spent many a weekend just hangin out at the local dragstrip or cruise spot or swap meet/car show.... somehow, most are dorks that wear bowties... so they are always on me about my BLUE OVAL beasts.. but we all respect the time, money and effort each has put into thier rides.
My step brother is someone that is what I call "book smart but mechanically retarded" he wouldn't know a line wrench from a vacuum gauge... guess who he calls when his car breaks down.... I grew up in the garage, my Dad and uncles were/are all gearheads.. some preferred two wheels to four, but they all pulled a wrench or two in thier time.
Come to think of it, I can't think of ANY friends that are not grease monkeys of one sort or another. However, alot of family would rather have teeth pulled than grease under thier finger nails.

LOLOLOL!! I grew up around a bunch of guys who could fix a jet engine with a toothpick and a rubber band if required. My old man and my brother are like that too. Except for one P.W.'ed cousin/friend who says "why do you want to fool with that old stuff", we all pretty much share common interests and have our own projects (whether that's an old truck, jeep, some woodworking project, a dirt late model car, or heck even blacksmithing). When I went to school, I was out of my element. I had "friends" who were okay but bored the life out of me. I drove a truck and I was always their "best friend" when they needed a couch or a wide-screen tv hauled. Take a guess who they called when their water heater quit or their volkswagen needed a brake job too. I was glad when I came home where most guys can fend for themselves.

I would bet that a lot of us here can relate to that. When I started charging for work done on "friends" and family vehicles it amazed me how few I ever saw again.
I've always been into cars/trucks as most of you. About 2 years ago I sold off most of my band gear to start a full on restomod of my 54'. (I've done a rebuild of a Firebird and a bunch of mods here and there, but never something this extensive.) Needless to say my friends also keep telling me to sell my trucks and join their band. I'm done with that life and moving on to something that doesn't make me feel like I'm married to 4 other guys. Luckily my dad, brother and childhood friend are into cars. I've slowly had several of my other "friends" stop contacting me. I'm happier in my garage then I am at the bars and concerts anyway to be honest. You gotta do what puts a smile on your face.
