I have a 2000 f250 7.3 when I turn the key to the on position to let the glow plugs warm up the volt gauge is at like 12-14 volts then about 2 seconds later I hear a humming sound and the dome light dims and the volt gauge drops all the way down, even if I have a battery charger on the truck it will do the same thing. anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks.
Its probably the glow plugs that are dimming the lights. On my truck after I start it if I turn the lights on they will be dim until the glow plugs turn off and then they will brighten up.The glow plugs can stay on up to 2 mins. even after it starts.Does it have enough juice to start it after the wait to start light goes off?
Cranking will drain the batts in 3 to 4 seconds? Wow! I'm getting ready to change my starter. It seems as though my starter is VERY sluggish, and mine will drain in 10-15 seconds. (funny thing is, my schumacher charger shows 85% charge remaining after cranking till it is obvious that its not spinning fast enough. Voltage on batts never drops below 12.6v, )
I got an aftermarket DENSO type unit, 4.0kw starter, if that don't start it, I've got other problems. This last cold snap has been hard on the old ORIGINAL starter.
Check All Bat cables, make sure they are tight at BOTH ends. If you have a set of jumper cables, hook one of the Neg of one of your bats and connect the other end to a solid metal part of the motor and try turning the switch on, If better, you have a cable problem or connection problem. I would also like to know, When the bats go dead, what is the voltage at the battery, Not the gauge in the truck?
