Belt Problem

Well, it appears that there is something wrong with the belt system in my van. I don't know if you read about it or not, but I recently had a problem with a brand new belt that broke apart. My son replaced that belt for me, but came home today and told me that it is half way off all the pulleys. That has to be a problem with the tensioner, correct? I think that maybe the spring inside of it is either broken or lost some of its springiness. I asked him and he said the tensioner did seem kind of hard to move when he put the belt on it. What do you guys think? Is there any way of checking just the tensioner? They don't cost that much to replace, so getting a new one won't be a problem. I just don't want to spend the money if there's some adjustment on them I don't know about. Thanks for your replies.

If the tensioner is "kinda hard to move......." then its a problem---they're spring loaded and should rotate through their movement quite easily. The pulley itself naturally needs to spin easily otherwise it drags across the belt heating it up and causing it to stretch.

Yes its cheap and probably needs changed ASAP.

Good news today. There's nothing wrong with the tensioner and I am pretty sure I figured out why it started to throw the belt after my son installed it. I took the tensioner off with the intention of just replacing it, but my instinct told me that it was fine and to put it back on. After I put it back on, I checked the movement it had and it feels just like a tensioner should. So, I had my son get another belt and supervised while he put it on. I noticed is that he didn't properly seat the belt onto the PS unit pulley. It was hard to tell that it wasn't seated like it should have been, but it was definitely not seated all the way. I asked him if that is how he did it the first time and he said yes. So, I showed him where he had made his mistake, helped him get the belt mounted properly, and the van is doin what it do.
