Fellas,
The serpentine belt on my '05 6.0L diesel is squealing like a blue Jay caught in the talons of a Red-Tailed Hawk!
The tensioner was shot so I replaced it about three weeks ago, and I thought that it might quiet the squealing some - no dice. It is squealing just the same! I inspected the belt at the time of the tensioner R&R and it looked fine - no cracks on the front or back. I suspect that the smooth side was subjected to glazing when the tensioner was bad. It does quiet down in the rain, so I don't think it's one of the other pulleys.
So Guys: What is your favorite belt dressing you'd recommend that I could apply to the belt to reduce all the noise?
Don't use belt dressing - some are simply silicone based like tire shine and others provided a tacky surface that supposedly keeps the belt from slipping. None of it works beyond the initial spray - but at least it usually gets all over your engine. I've cleaned too many customer vehicles which have it all gummed up on pulleys, etc and they still need the belt replaced. Get a new belt and make sure it's a quality one - like Gates to get rid of the noise.
TDappleman,
Yeah, that is what I suspected.
Dang! - I'm not looking forward to changing the belt on that EB-loaded, 6.0L !
Have you got any secret method you can share to go about changing the serpentine belt?
The best thing I can say is get the tool or at least a long handled 3/8" ratchet to make the job a little easier. I have the Gear Wrench set at my shop and it only takes about 10 minutes to change the belt on one. The worst thing for me is getting interrupted in the middle of a job and then having to come back and already forgetting the layout. The diagrams don't replace the memory of how it just came off!
I would recommend not using belt dressing... or at the very least use is sparingly !
belts need SOME slip to handle the loads, make it too tacky and the belt will snap -
no matter if you have 6 people in tux and gowns going to a wedding !!!!
and WOW, what a noise it made when it went !
and WOW, what a time getting the beast turned and stopped !
NO!!! Not WD40,, will do nothing but attract dirt...but will dispace water very efficiently.. Just get a new belt..my Z28 was horrible with that until i replaced the tensioner and belt.
Belt dressing is snake oil. Don't use it. sometimes even after replacing the serp belt you will get the squealing. It's not easy, but totally clean all your pulley's that have groves in them. I have done this a lot when I worked as a tech at a dealership. I would remove the serp belt, then use brake clean and wash off the pulley's followed by a compressed air blow off or a good wiping down of each pulley with a clean rag. Cleaning the pulley's is often overlooked, but I would bet their dirty. Oh and replace your your belt.
