Running rough under light acceleration

Just got a 98 f150 w/ 5.4 4x4 excab. It idles fine but under light acclerationit starts bucking and missing bad, if I step on it, it down shifts and accelerates fine. If I try to maintain one speed it misses bad. It is not throwing any codes right now. The check engine light did come on for like a minute but went back off before I could have it read. I hooked up a scanner just to see if any codes were stored and got p0300 and p0301. Ideas? Iam going to clean the MAF and check for vacuum leaks. I hear the rear plug and coils can get water in them causing similar problems. Any more ideas?

I think the 02s would probably throw a code, but thanx. Also whenits missing the whole truck bucks back and forth and the drivers door rattles insanely bad. Any ideas on where to start there? I searched and didn't find much.

Miles on the truck?
I'd start with a full tune up, plugs, clean MAF, IAC, TB, replace fuel filter
Check all the vaccum lines and coolant hoses - replace as necessary - shoot the truck is what 12/13 years old??? Never assume the previous owners took care of it.

My 97 has codes, I've got next weekend all planned out to do the PM on the truck and fix the codes.

Woo here. Why are we ignoring the fault codes?
The 300 code is telling you the PCM is detecing a miss and the 301 code is telling you cylinder #1.
Start at this point and clear the 301 code.
If there is still remants of the miss, look futher.

What he said. ^^^^^^^^^ replace plug number 1, I'd replace the boot while Ur at it. If the plug is very worn chances r so r the rest. OEM plugs. Shop around for the boots. They can be pricey. Let us know.

Coils can be pricey. Number 1 is reletively easy access. I would just replace the plug and see if you get the 301 code back before trying a coil. Now if it was number 4 I might think about it. Actually I did replace plug and coil when I got a 304 code on my 98 Scab 5.4 with 186,000 miles. No coolant leak but did not want to have to redo #4 as it is an awful tight squeeze. Have had no other coil falures and not even sure #4 failed.
If you do need a coil Ibought an Accell coil from Advance Auto parts. Half the price of others and so far so good. Get the 20% Advance auto discount coupon off this site. Good deal ! I ordered it online 4 pickup at my local store and had it an hour later for about 30 bucks with the coupon.
Good luck and let us know.

I had the same thing happen. There is a crack in my head gasket letting antifreeze leak into a cylinder. I replaced that plug and dumped in a bottle of iron tite in rad..that was a year ago and still runs pro.
