Last saturday i flushed the radiator and opened up all of the leaks it has. I took it to a radiator guy who just suggested that I get a new one because it would be cheaper to to that than for him to rebuild it or build a new one for me.
So for those of you who have replaced your radiators what would you suggest?
It's a f150 351M air conditioned summer temps reach 115 F
If the engine is still mostly stock and never really had a cooling issue, a good safe upgrade for you would be to upgrade to a stock replacement radiator for a factory 460 powered truck like yours. It will be better than your regular one, but without the high costs and hassels of a performance aluminum one. And its a direct bolt in deal!
We have the blessing of have an APC in our area and they beat everyone else by $100 on my radiator for my 77 F150 and my 94 Explorer. I am including a link so may you could compare their prices and see if it helps you out any. Auto Parts Company -- Home You will have to register to get part pricing.
That is a nice looking radiator, but I don't need anything like that. I just want something that is going to work and not let me down, and at a reasonable price.
I really don't know. I was more conserned about not getting plastic tanks, so it would be more like the original. I would think now days the aluminum would be as good as the copper. I just didn't want the plastic tanks although they would probably work fine.
The one I am looking at getting is at Autozone. It's a 4 row copper core with brass tanks. It's about 5/8 of an inch thicker than what my truck had, but I don't think it would cause any issues.
Thicker is better as long as the fan will still clear it. Aluminum is better, but, an aluminum one with plastic tanks is cheap junk ~ At least the ones offered for these trucks. Had a friend go down that road, bad news bears. An all aluminum one is out of your price range, not to mention you dont need all that overkill in your situation anyway. If I were you, stick with an original style brass/ copper one. Its tried and true, and cheaply priced enough. Just get the one for the big block it should be about the same price.
Thanks for all of your opinions. I just ordered one from autozone. It's the 4 row, copper core, with brass tanks. Autozone calls it the "heat buster" Hopefully it will show up early next week. Been itching to drive my truck. It's been down for almost a week. Good thing I've got two other vehicles to choose from.
