There is a program error on these odometers, making them stop at 399999,9 and then roll back.
One solution they did years ago was; taking out the complete instrument, write down the actual mileage, send it to the Ford Motor Company in the US. There they would re-program the unit with the new mileage, and ship it back. Then it will count onwards until 999999.
The other solution was to get a new odometer, start over and hope that it would change to 400000 when that time comes.
Neither of these two options are availlable anymore.
Anybody here who can re-program these things? Or can make a computer program that can access it for DIY.

if this is true and i'll have to assume it is , then that means that the psom contains the actual mileage but that also doesn't quite make sense because the problem is that the display physically doesn't have the required crystals to display digits past 3 on the first number, now if the psom has the actual mileage it would tell the dispaly to show it and we would not see a three all the time but a weird half of a 4,5,6, etc. this means that either the psom also needs to be reprogrammed or the psom is telling the display to show the three, its weird that ford would take this program error and just keep producing it, no tsb no recall no nothing, all of the trucks diesel and gas have this problem, this makes me think that this wasn't an error it was on purpose probably as a comment stated earlier, to save money.
however from what your saying it sounds like there might be a solution the psom has to be reprogrammed and the crystal display needs to be changed out, a better display of that size should be easy to get but it won't say trip when you have the trip shown, install could be a little difficult, but the real problem will be getting into the psom and reprogramming it

The person at that dealership would have to provide a pic or video of a cluster at key-on start-up, showing the upper left LCD segment on the leftmost digit that allows a 4, 5, 6, 8 or 9 to display, that DOESN'T EXIST on our odometers; otherwise his Email doesn't make sense. Is he aware that that the odometer isn't physically capable of displaying 4xx,xxx, no matter what the PSOM is programmed to do?

He also stated that some odometers actually did make it past 4 and up. But he only saw that on 2 vehicles he serviced. So as the mechanic states, it will count onwards. but the internal circuitry of the odometer itself has the error.
The brief digits we see when ignition is switched on is actually the error code.
Another fellow on facebook here in Norway had one that showed both 4 and 5. He had a 1996 F-250 7.3 PSD.
I have 1994 F350 Powerstroke with 544,000 miles and it reads 344,000 miles.
I asked the dealer years ago about the problem and he said at the time he had never had a truck with over 399,999 miles on it. I never worried about, the next buyer for my truck will be paying by the pound for it so I doubt he will care much about mileage!
Yes, it's a 1 owner. It had 5 miles on it when I bought it, I'm the only fat person to ever sit in the drivers seat!. It still is on the original engine, most just normal replacement parts, water pumps, alternators, etc. I've just replaced the whole brake system, still have the soft pedal syndrome, will put with it for now, a larger master cylinder in the near future.
Thanks for the welcome, I've been here before it's just been a long time.

I was looking at an F 450 MC, is there something else that will fit? I have a couple of other crisis that supersede this crisis but it's right after them. I can put up with to commute to work and back, for a few more weeks.
All 97's have what they call zero loss MC. F5TZ-2005-CA part #. I think when you start getting into the 450's they have hydroboost brakes, a system that uses power steering fluid pressure instead of vacuum pressure from our vacuum pumps.
I will check out the 450 & 550's at work, just to see what the MC looks like. I'll have my parts house look up the part # you gave me. I probably need to replace the RAB unit while I'm at it, it's the original one. Then everything has been changed out.
Thank's for the help,
Ben
