1990 F250 Neutral Rollover?
Hi folks, been quite awhile since I've posted but here's another one. I recently purchased a 1990 F250 4x4 351W 5sp ZF manual trans, about 160K miles. And yes, I've read TONS about this neutral rollover, but I wanted to get your opinions before I take it to a trans shop next week. The sound I hear is banging, like a hammer from the inside of the trans (you can even hear it outside!) when clutch is in, idling at a stop. It doesn't matter weather or not I'm in gear either. If I'm stopped, idling (at around 900 rpm I think), clutch in I hear a banging, seemingly in synch with rpm, and starts when the trans is warmed up (doesn't make a sound cold). As in one revolution, one bang, Up until about 1500 rpm, beyond which point it's as right as the mail. I've heard neutral rollover described as a "rattling" or as "marbles in the case" but this sounds more like "a guy with a hammer trying to get out". So, what's transmission shop guy going to tell me? It's neutral rollover and not to worry about it, or go buy a new trans?
