axle code???????

my axle code on my door is 16. what does that mean? from my research i think i have 4.10 gears with some kind of traction aid. does the axle code indicate this or was it added later? my truck is a 1981 f-150 4x4 300 i-6, np435 4spd and a np208 t-case.

While he is asking, I have the same exact truck only the axle code is 14. Anyone know what I have?

"1" in the first position generally means an open differential. "H" ,means limited slip. 14 is a 9" with 3.00 gears, but I don't know about 16. It could be 4.10s.

btw the metal tag on my axle says 3L55. so it originally came with a limited slip and 3.55 gears right or could this just be another thirdmember that was added with the 4.10 gears?

axle code???????

16 is NOT the code for 3.55 L/S (which is what "3L55" means), so that 3rd member has been swapped. You'd have to roll-test it to find the actual ratio.
