7.3 Starting issues now missing a beat
I have a 2000 250 with 7.3. The truck has been having issues turning over in cold weather. I cleaned up batteries and made sure they were tight which solve some issues. Next the alternator went down, replaced it. Truck was doing better until cold weather hit. Now it doesn't want to crank unless it is plugged up.
When it does crank without being plugged it coughs smoke until it cranks to blow a puff of smoke. I have read on other sites where this may be the glow plug module. Another site led to a solution at the bottom of the page which described a leaking o-ring which was causing a spray of oil under the valve cover, this might explain the smoke and starting issue...may not. This is one issue.Numero 2. I was recently driving down the road and all of the sudden the truck started missing bad. I limped it home and parked it. It was a beast to start to load on a trailer but is now at my friends fathers (mechanic) shop. We are planning to hook a diagnostic computer up to see what exactly is causing the miss, but the other issue may still remain.
Any input before we crack this thing open would be hugely appreciated.
As for the not wanting to start I'd look at the Glow Plug Relay. I changed mine out from one at NAPA and that fixed my problem.
The only thing I can think of is Under Valve Cover harness if one goes bad one of the exhaust manifolds would be colder than the other due to it only running on 4 cylinders. I'm not sure how bad your limp home was though.
Otherwise there is a truck forum you can go to in the Ford Trucks Enthusiasts under diesel and those guys/gals know a lot of good info.
The limp home was pretty rough. There very possibly could have been multiple misfires judging by the shake and the sound. The truck would shake vigorously upon takeoff. I would have to rev the engine to a minimum of 2000 rpm in 1 to keep from stalling. I started taking off in L and was still having to rev engine. So there was obviously no power to the engine.
Is there anyway to test these items for failure or is it a buy it and try it approach?
Thanks again
I know it's not that exciting sounding but that's what I know about them.
Try checking out the 1999-2003 truck forum under Diesel and there you will find more answers as there is a lot of info in there. It's still in the FTE just scroll down a little more and you'll find it.
If its due an oil change, change it as it will give issues when cold on running.
