Another 5.4L Plugs Changed Thread
Just wanted to post up another "spark plug change" thread.
I tackled this on the 06 F150 Screw with a 5.4L and original plugs.
Had 76K on the original plugs and I was getting a bucking/surge if I floored it to pass someone on the highway, so I decided to tackle the job myself.
FWIW, my boss has an 07 Expedition with 109K. He took it into the local ford dealer, and they changed the plugs and replaced one ignition coil for the bargain price of.....$923 dollars. OUCH.
I bought a set of Motorcraft Plugs, BWD Coil Boots, Nickel Anti Sieze, a can of carb cleaner and The Lisle Tool for 245 dollars.
All in all this was NOT a bad job as long as you have the tool handy.
I started on the driver side, got #5 out, no problems. 6 and 7 Broke and 8 came out ok. The tool was great but you must follow directions closely otherwise you will not be successful.
I found the biggest thing is to turn 1/6 to 1/4 of a turn, spray the hole and walk away. Come back, rock it back and forth 1/4 of a turn, then loosen more.
Driver side, I got 1,2,3 out no problem. #4 broke, the one all the way in back.
I unbolted the PCM and bracket, and had good access to get the tool in there to get the plug out.
Truck ran better but not great. Took it over to my buddy's shop and scanned it, and Coil #4 was misfiring 18 times per cycle, but not enough to throw a engine light.
Put a new coil in and she smoothed out.
The biggest Lesson learned here for me was to take your time. So for those who are apprehensive, don't be afraid. This is not a bad job at all. I have already rented the tool to a local FTE guy, and hes gonna try to do his plugs himself!
