cam problems

cam problems

2000 f550 v-10 three camshaft bearing caps have broken engine was shut off emediatly. can i just put new bearings and caps on to save this engine need to get it running again to see if it was a oil pressure problem. or if this has happened to anyone else what the cause could be.

Hard to say but doesn't sound good. Did the caps come loose or are they in pieces? Look at the remains of the caps and on the head under the cam by the broken caps. Look for scoring. They should look and feel smooth. If not you got some type of oiling issue that caused your problem.

Modulars do not use a "bearing" on the camshaft "tower" in the cylinder head. The aluminum is machined and heat treated, and acts as the "bearing" surface. If you replace the cam caps-the head MUST be align-bored, and if there is enough damage to warrant that on a stock head-you're far better off buying a reman'd or a new cylinder head.
