Well I tried everything that was sugested to me other than adding another lead to the drivers side battery and replace the ends with marine ones. I am also going to wire tire that plug on top of alt. Wiggled wires nothing. I checked all wires that came near anything and nothing. I also noticed that even when the plug in meter is at 11.0 for glow plugs the gauge on the dash does NOT move, actually it never moves. So it makes me wonder if the battery light has a diode between it and the gauge on the dash. Back to what Strokingbeast said about his truck. Or does the signal go to the battery light and then the gauge. I am thinking it maybe at the dash end not the alt. And for now I am not taking the dash apart. I really need to get and study a wiring diagram and see if I can run it down. I could then power up one end and check voltage at other end or run ohms at each end. Thanks guys for all the help trying to figure this one out.
Thanks Clint I did that too when you and I started talking about this a few weeks ago. And it was good or so they say? I also thought about taking it off and taking it to a shop that rebuilds them and have them run a high rpm test for more than 30 seconds. But even if it reads good I am afraid they will come up with some reason it should rebuilt. In other words " Sell me" they do good work they built an marine alt for my boat and up the amps from 70 to 100amp and works good. But I hate to spend the money and then 2 days later the light comes on. I would just pull my hair out.
I am having the same problem. I have replaced both batteries, they were starting to go, but probebly have lasted a couple more years. The alt is putting out 14.3v whether or not the light is on or off. Has anyone come up with a difinative answer to this problem??
Put a voltmeter on the batteries before your start the motor. Look for a/c voltage when the alternator starts charging. You should see less that 1volt ac. More than one volt a.c. indicates a bad diode in the alternator.
Nick
I did test as u said. There was a 2.6ac jump when alt kicked in. I am going to try a new alternator and hopefully that will fix problem. I'll let u know.
My battery light came on the dash and I checked out my batt voltage and it ran them down pretty good so I had the shop down the road check my alt and he said it was shot so I asked him of a reputable rebuilder and 143.00 and some change, they rebuilt everything in it. Dimming lights the previous week and then a very slow crank made my desision for a total rebuild, couldn't be happier..
