4x4 MPG

I wonder if this normal or if my truck has a problem?

83 f150 351w c6 np208 3.08 31x1050x15
I lives about a mile from work,
I have a lot of short trips, warm up for before most.
Have had a lot of snow lately, so the hubs have been locked all the time, and in 4x4 a lot of the time.
47miles 6.8 gal 6.5 mpg(did not use 4x4 as much)
fixed 2 vac leaks
47miles 11gals 4.2 mpg

have not owned the truck long enough to check the mpg only in 2wd.

my 87 351w c6 3.08 2wd has only been getting about 8mpg

running with the hubs locked is a fuel sucker.
my 02 diesel runs around 11 mpg on winter fuel in 2 wheel. lock the hubs, and it drops to 8 mpg. put the T-case in 4 high, and it drops to 5-6 mpg.

couple of reasons for the crap mileage. 1. winter gas is a different blend, and it sucks and generally lowers mpg. 2. whether the t-case was engaged or not, locking the hubs makes for more drag on the drivetrain because all the parts in the front axle are spinning. 3. idling eats up a lot more fuel than people realize. 4. its an old carbed 3 speed auto v8 truck. i doubt you would ever see more than 12mpg in good weather with a perfect tune. 5. obviously when you are in 4x4 you are now working the engine harder equalling more fuel usage. 6. i'm not a carb guru by any means, but they are supposed to be tuned differently for winter time and this may be another thing adding to your fuel consumption.

Is that a carbed 351W? (running rich?) My 93 351W which is fuel injected (speed density version) got 14-15 on the highway. That is driving easy at the speed limit with 35 bfg pumped up to 35 psi and 3.55 gears. Around town was 10-11 mpg. No where near that now with 4.88 gears and 36 swampers.

MPG Update

43 miles 6 one mile trips, the rest was the drive out to the lake and back. No 4x4,hubs unlocked. 4.9 gals of gas 8.77mpg I would go longer between fill ups but the gas gauge don't work. Being in the truck for that long I can tell she is rich.
