1997 F250, 7.3, 4wd,5 speed manual
In checking the fuel mileage I find that the trip odometer will reset and works, but it only works up to 34 or 35 miles and then the next number to appear is 28 and then goes back up to 34 or 35 and continues this loop. I switched over to the regular odometer and it is also running a loop.
I just bought the truck a week ago so I have no history.
When I bought the truck the guy had an older edge chip that connected to the wire going into the pump. He told me the chip wasnt working properly because of a weak lift pump. I changed the lift pump but it still acted as if it was starving for fuel in a 5th gear pull. I unhooked the chip and it runs much better so I am thinking the chip is bad. I am wondering if the chip could have changed something it the computer. I have not had a chance to scan it but I do not have a check engine light on.
This is a new one on me, I have never heard of any speedo doing this on any vehicle???
Probably not the 97 has teeth or cogs for the odometer that might be broke and the miles on the truck are a few more than are showing if the odometer isn't working. Or is it digital reading?
I wonder if the sensor that's on the rear axle could have anything to do with it. I'm sure someone with more knowledge will come along and throw an idea out there.
I thought the sensor on the rear was for the ABS system. The VSS is usually on the transmission. The really confusing thing is that it is accurate, when I filled up I went home next and I know it is 5.2 miles to the house and I watched it to see if it was accurate because it has bigger than stock tires.
With that being said the VSS is apparently working but the PCM or BCM should control the signal.
I just read that some of the chips can make the PCM loose the factory settings, I am starting to think it had something to do with the performance chip. That would explain why it ran worse with the chip installed. I will scan it tomorrow and see if I can see any history codes. Then I need to find the factory settings, I dont know if my scanner has them
