Decoding engine tag Help

Hi all , newbie here.

I got refered here from the FordSix site. I recently bought a 300 six out of a 1965 dump truck and would like help decoding the engine tag, it reads

300 65 2
5-G 848-J

So far I got

300(Engine) 65(1965) 2(?)
5-G(1965-July) 848-J (?)

I am hoping that it is a HD since it came from a dump truck and has a forged crank, I haven't been able to get in the garage yet though to find out. It does not have the HD exhaust but previous owner said he swapped the intake manifold when changing the carb.. (???) So maybe he change exh. manifold too. I Figure at the very least it will have the .912" connecting rods.

The guy that refered me here said there is a member here called numberdummy that could help.

Has any one here had a chance to look at Fords 1965-1972 Master Truck catalog? Does this catalog have decoding information in it? If it does, it would be worth the $20 for the file on CD.

This won't help as much as you'd like, but it might be worth something. The 1966 factory workshop manual shows the engine tag and gives representative, not specific, information. As you already know the "300" on the top line is engine CID, the "65" is the vehicle model year, and the "2" is the change level - but without more information that doesn't help much. On the bottom line, the "5G" is the July '65 build date, and "848-J" is the engine code number, but again, more information is needed. Hopefully, Number Dummy will come along and provide it. I have the '64-'72 Truck Master Parts manual CD and it is well worth the money if for nothing more than the illustrated parts breakdowns showing what's supposed to be there, how things go together, and part numbers information. Good luck.

Thanks for the opinion on the parts catalog. We got the engine unloaded and the oil pan off the other day and it had a forged crank, plan is to have it offset ground to get the piston up to zero deck.
