Hello, I've been a member for several years, but my first post.
You people on FTE really know your stuff. I had a 2001 F250
crew cab and bought parts off (pete-6637 mod) but truck got
totaled (tree fell on it) I purchased an 2002 F250 super cab 4x4
7.3 and had heat blowing to defrost, replaced pump, and pass. side hub (new) as 4x4 switch would not engage unless hubs was locked in.
Fixed heater problem, but still won't engage in 4x4 unless hubs are locked
in. What is my next move? Thanks guys.
Follow the vacuum lines down to the hubs, they're probably not in good condition. If you have a way to pull vacuum and watch a gauge, it'll help you track down the leak. Hopefully it's an easy fix and not inside the axle. Here's a pic Robin had up yesterday, show's the vac line to the hubs. And another for the heck of it.
I have been lazy and putting off checking my lines. I have the non-locking hubs issue too. I have been just getting out and locking the hubs. I know...DORK!
Now maybe I will get off my butt and get it fixed since I know what I am really looking for.
Walt, and Izzy Thanks for info. As I've stated I replaced the vaccum pump, as the old one would only put out 10 psi at hubs. I also cleaned
and packed hubs, replacing the pass. side. hub, and replaced with new rubber o rings. I found behind glove box a loose hose. The heater defaults overnite to defrost for about 1-2 mins. then returns to floor. But pump is
still running nonstop. I plan on smoking the lines to find the leak. As
the hubs still won't engage, unless locking them in. Again, Thanks
for help, will post when I find out whats going on, as I've spent too
much now to throw in the towel. On a positive note the 02' starts
even in o degress where the 01' had to plug in.
Hey, found the problems ( not good) the ac-heater defost- vent switch
was bad (leaking) the 4 wheel drive accuator on pass side inner fender was bad, and the seals where air line goes into axle are bad.
After talking to to parts man was told that I also needed the seals (2)
that goes before hub and the 2 round rubber gasket and circlip 2 per
side. I've been searching for the repair of this job, and have yet to
find it. If any one could direct me I'd appreciate it. Also, I'm thinking
that Walt was talking about (yellow seals) in the unitized axle, are in fact not yellow, if not please let me know, before I start. And a word to
the wise if a carlot says 4 wheel drive is working, DON'T BELIEVE IT!
Crawl underneath and look cause wants you drive off lot you're
on your own! Thanks again for the help.
Well got all the seals installed-Thanks to Guzzle-Walt. Also, made the knuckle bearing install tool- 1 -12" 1.25 dia. pipe threaded both ends-
1-1.25 dia. cap, 1-1.25 flange ground down to fit inside of knuckle
bearing. Took 7.5 hrs. with cleaning and hubs. Found that the pass.
side had no yellow seal at all. But new hub and ball joints, rotors
and brakes. Again, Thank-you all! Remember that if you install the
yellow gasket "Install" the knuckle bearing! Also, I took off the K&N
air filter and reinstalled the 6637- BIG DIFFERENCE!
