my explorer will not shift into the last gear.you can feel it shift from lie first, second then third i guess but no further.
so i am doing 50 mph and my rpm is on 4or 5
So are you getting 3 shifts, or only 2 shifts? What year is your Explorer and is it a V6 or V8? Are any lights in the instrument cluster illuminated when this is happening?
It's not normal for the OD light to blink. If you're getting 3 shifts, that gets you to fourth gear. I don't recall if the 5-speed auto was optional or standard with the V6 in 1997. If you have the 4-speed, your transmission is shifting in to all gears. You list quite a range of engine speed at 50mph, the resolution of your tachometer should certainly be enough to determine if it's more like 4k or 5k rpms. If it's different depending on the trip, that would indicate a problem with the lockup torque converter as well. Your lockup torque converter is part of the overdrive, so with the flashing OD light that would make sense. Since apparently the light's been flashing since before this issue, there could easily be additional codes now that are recorded but you can't tell that since the light was flashing for an unknown reason before.
There will probably be a tag on the transmission that will identify the transmission. You can also determine which it is by the transmission pan's shape and bolt count. You might also be able to determine 4- or 5-speed by if there is a transmission dipstick under the hood or not. This is certainly not my area of experience, hopefully someone in the know with this will chime in....
As for getting the codes, you can try Autozone but generally their scan tools will only read powertrain ('P') codes. With the flashing OD light you likely have transmission specific codes as well which will require a professional scan tool. You might be able to find a local transmission shop that will scan the code(s) and give you an estimate at no charge.
